Do I have a problem?

I am not sure if this means anything to anyone, but I am tired of feeling like a freak or spaz.
I have this finger thing I do (rubbing at best description). Apparently, I have done this since I was born and now I am 27.
I do it randomly throughout a day. I cannot stop doing it. If I think about it, I have to do it instantly. I find objects to help ease the need to do it; like tables, books, pillow cases, a pocket, a friends pocket, anything that has a stiff edge.
It has gotten to the point that I have calluses in between my fingers. The more stress or the more excited I get, the worse it gets.
Someone tried to "cure" me of it one time and held my hands...I freaked out, badly.
It's not horrible, I can live with it (honestly, I love doing it, I just feel better doing it), but I really feel the older I get, the worse it gets. I don't remember having calluses the size of dimes on my fingers a few years ago.
So I'm lost now. I need help understanding why I can't stop. Am I alone? Am I a nut? Is this a symptom of something else? Or should I not worry about it?

P.S. I forgot to mention I do it with my freaking toes too! I wrote this and as I was typing I am doing the finger thing in between words and the toe thing all-the-while.

:) It's so habit, I have to pay attention to see if I am doing it. A lot of my friends end up pointing out that I am about ready to start a fire with my fingers. *sigh*
