It’s versatile, it’s low in fat, and it’s high in protein. And it just might help your lungs stay lusty and young. We’re talking about soy.

Don’t blanch just yet. Prepared correctly, soy can taste sublime. Certain kinds, like tofu, easily take on the flavor of whatever you cook with. And research suggests that some extra tofu or edamame in your diet may slash your risk of pulmonary diseases to boot.

Tasty Airway Protection
Specifically, early research shows that eating soy foods is associated with a reduced risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). That’s a category of lung ailments that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. In one recent Japanese study, those with the highest intakes of soy foods not only had lower risk of COPD but also had better overall lung function. Here’s another food that lungs love.

A Controversial Food?
There’s a ton of conflicting evidence about the health benefits of soy. But as a whole food, it really is tops when it comes to nutrition. Low-fat, high fiber, high protein -- all good things. If you’d like to know exactly what soy is good for, check out this article from Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen.

And start your love affair with soy by making these easy, tasty recipes from EatingWell:
■Sesame-Crusted Tofu with Spicy Pineapple Noodles
■Edamame Lo Mein
■Lasagna Rolls

Short note tonite.I am thinking about trying soy,as more protein is encouraged but I am dieting too. Thanks,AndiB

No kind of food is going to help COPD . Sorry to sound negative..but this disease does progress, and it can change overnight, mine did. I woke up one morning, worse, and have been on O2- 24/7 ever since (about 3 months ago ). Since this disease is fatal, I plan to enjoy life, and eat whatever I want, and do whatever I feel lkie doing.
I wonder how many women passed up dessert on the Titanic ??

You are so right! I just look at your picture and I know your not straining your heart and lungs as bad as I was.I have lost 40 lbs and can enjoy life more like walking my dog. Thanks for reminding me tho.I only need to be comfortable.Thats why I only set my goals 30lbs at a time with no end.Think I'll let God choose that.I am so thank full for your honesty and friendship.I don't know which I treasure more, but your a precious gift from God.Most people can't talk straight about death and dying. Thanks ,my friend,AndiB
