What supplements do you use to build your immune system up while on chemo?

Just wondering what you all are using to help build your immune systems up. We have lots of sickness in our home this winter. I'm on maintenance chemo currently.

Thanks,

Molly

I'm also wondering if you and others on this forum undergoing chemo have posed this same question to your oncologist? What has your oncologist or G.P. advised you to do to build up your immune system to prevent "sickness" or weakness after undergoing an immune wrecking treatment?

Mine said to try to eat healthy and take a multivitamin. Antioxidants interfere with chemo. I'm sure others will post what they take or do. Take care, Judy

Hi Molly,

I like the supporting program that Bill Henderson recommends - you can get one of his books and check it out. It is simple, and mainly consists of an anti-cancer diet and nutrition.

There is also an excellent book called "Anti-Cancer" by David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD. It is the best source I've found on the value of natural foods in fighting specific types of cancers.

The best advice is not to ask your oncologist or GP this question at all, unless they have been trained in nutritional, integrated and/or functional medicine.

It is simply not their domain.

So when you get advice like "antioxidants interfere with chemo" you will know that your medical specialist - who is in fact your disease specialist - knows little about the use of nutraceuticals in health care and simply doesn't want to take the risk of anything interfering with his or her treatment for the disease process.

Some antioxidants are contraindicated during some chemotherapy protocols, usually only those involving platinum compounds because these work because they are the most prooxidant - or just plain toxic - substance the body is likely to ever see in a lifetime.

A comprehensive nutritional program and/or biological therapy should be part of everyone's healing during and post cancer treatment.

When it comes to cancer, supporting the path to wellness is just as important as medical intervention to treat the disease.

Find a good medical doctor trained in the holistic arts and nutritional/biological therapy, or even a Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor, and work with them to support the body's healthy function.
