Lung Cancer or Pneumonia

After cat scan and pet scan the doctor advises I have 111A lung cancer in left lower. Other doctors look at the same scans and declare that I only have pneumonia and probably not LC. Can't do biopsy until the pneumonia is resolved in about one month
Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

I wish I had an answer for you. Praying it is only pneumonia and nothing more. My husband was not staged based off of his CT Scan, it was not until they did the biopsy that he was given his stage.

CJv,

Pneumonia is technically an "infiltrate" radiographically, which can be indistinguishable from a tumor/mass.
Have they done a CT w/contrast? Can you provide precisely what the report states? That MIGHT be helpful.

Many, many times what's thought to be a resistant pneumonia turns out to be lc after several courses of Ab's don't clear it.

Oops, not good at multitasking at work. OK, what exactly does the CT report say?

G

Ct with contrast report says possible primary malignant tumor. Never saw the pet scan report but the mass and some central nodes lit up.

CJv,

Is there a description in the body of the report, not just a conclusion?

We're all praying that it's only pneumonia.
Sounds stupid but sure hoping that is all there is.

Meat of the report says:
Very small left plural effusion. No lymphadenopathy. No pulmonary embolism. 2.81X 1.97cm soft tissue mass lower LL posterialmedially. This may be a primary lung tumor. A pulmonary infarct is possible. There is some compressive atlectasis in both lower lobes. A pet ct is suggested. Impression posslble lung tumor posterioralmedially

My husband did this back in March. Woke up one morning and couldn't breathe. At the hospital they said it was pneumonia. He was in for a week and treated with high doses of antibiotics. He felt better when released. The only problem was the mass/pneumonia was still there. By the 4th CT scan in June we were referred to a lung specialist. Had the biopsy was first told it was Small Cell. Had the path report come back malignant but inconclusive on smlc. They sent the path to the Mayo Clinic it came back Thymoma. Went had the surgery "wedge" as they called it. Well the final diagnosis is Non Small Cell. But the wrong surgery. Its been hard a long hard last few months. I pray your is pneumonia.

I think its terrible that they even say its a possibility until after the biopsy... they shouldnt say anything.. My mom when dx, they saw something in an ex ray and said we want to have a ct scan done and then it was confirmed as it already metasized to the liver.. RIP my mom.. July 12,2011... I still go on this site ever day and watch over everyone.. terrible disease,... god bless you!

I wonder if a third opinion would be helpful?

CaptJv,

After reading this description, it's inconclusive but, leaning to malignancy if there is a well defined mass.
I have never discouraged additional opinions and would only hedge a little here, get copies of the CDs and overnight to radiology at NYU, MSKCC, Dana Farber.
I'm certain there are some very aggressive chest-cutters that would recommend cuttin' the sumbitch out and some who would agree, wait&watch.
If the time comes, I'd find a top doc to do a VATS and maybe a wedge resection.
Almost forgot, the doc who believes it's malignant oughta be getting a CT of abdomen & pelvis, Brain MRI and bone scan.

My PET scan covered from top of ears to bottom of pelvis and nothing found except what I mentioned before. Is this sufficient?

No, PETs have there flaws. They can be complimentary but, not definitive. Especially of no use with a bone scan or brain MRI.
BTW, don't get discouraged even if it is lc, it's small, well defined, appears non-metastatic.

Thought I'd add to what you've already been told here...my husbands first xray was thought to be pneumonia....was put on 10 days course of avelox, then repeat XRAY....pulm said looks same, let's repeat another 10 course of avelox.....this took us right into XMAS....due to see pulm again right after xmas.....xray still looks same....said to have CT....had CT and still said looks like some type of infection.....i ask, "are you worried it could be cancer"?....he said no, looks like infection....need to do bronchoscopy....guess what....Adenocarcinoma.....he was quite shocked.....took about 7 weeks from first visit , thinking pneumonia, to concluding it was LC....

As the Capt pointed out initially, pneumonia treated with Abx's takes a month to clear radiographically so, that 30 day wait is "tricky".

G

I pray that it's pneumonia. My dad's nsclc started out with a pleural effusion and we thought pneumonia. Took almost 2 weeks to find out otherwise.
