Hyperbaric Treatment for Severe Radiation Esophagitis

Has anyone had really severe radiation esophagitis? My mom is being fed through a g tube in her stomach because she can't swallow without a great deal of pain. She's been on all the pain meds, syrups and numbing agents. She gets the best results with a polymer based product called Mugard, however, she can only take a couple of sips of liquid without pain. Her oncologist wants her to begin hyperbaric chamber treatments at UCLA in order to speed tissue healing and blood vessel development in the radiation damaged areas. Does anyone have any input on this? Thanks!

From my understanding, I don't see any negatives to this ... it can only help things heal faster, so if it is being offered, go for it

I to had severe esophagitis from radiation to the center of my chest. Is she done with her treatment? After I was done I continued having a tremendous amount of pain when I tried to swallow even a sip of water. My doctor ordered a endoscopy and it was discovered that I had a ulcer in my esophagus and some sort of yeast infection from the radiation. Put me on some meds and in about three or four days, saw a vast improvement. Hope this helps.

She finished 30 radiation treatments along with 3 cycles of alimta/carbo over a month ago and had to be hospitalized for 2 1/2 weeks as a result of treatment. Her esophagus actually got worse after the radiation was completed. Endoscopy showed 10 cm of damage consistent with radiation damage. No fungus, herpes, yeast, etc.

A friend of mine had hyperbaric oxygen therapy for radiation burns he received during prostate cancer treatment. It worked very well.

I wish I had been offered that option back in 2004. I had such severe radiation esophagitis that I lost over 40 lbs because I could not eat or drink,. I did have an endoscopy done and it showed several ulcers. Stayed on a very soft diet, cream of wheat, cream soups etc until it healed.
However, I now have problems swallowing due to the severe scarring on my esophagus. I choke very easily. Hopefully the hyperbaric chamber treatments will prevent this.

On Feb. 28th, I finished 33 radiations treatments directed at sub-aortic lymph node where lc recurred.
My swallowing has improved but it took months and on some days, like yesterday, it felt worse than before; it seems healing kinda backslides. I can't figure it out. I would try the hyperbaric treatment if I was offered it.
Good luck,
Stacy

Hi guys my dad did do the endoscopy they discovered an ulcer in his oesoephogus! However after treatment and drip fed he still can't swallow a thing- its been 3 months since radiation and he spend about a month in hospital. He is soo despondent and really has given up hope. The cancer - ca lung is still confined the node and no where else. Thank GOd. His doctor says to just manage pain but that's not comforting or providing a solution. Someone please help us!!!

The insertion of a g tube for my mom is a God send. She only lost about ten pounds and is putting the weight back on. It really got her back to normal, in fact, we are going to ask to have it removed because she can now take her meals by mouth. It still hurts on one side but now it is very manageable. In a couple of weeks we hope to see more improvement from the hyperbaric treatments. Just trying to improve her quality of life.

After my radiation and chemo I also developed an ulcer in my esophogus. It took well over 4 weeks for it to heal and me to be able to eat and drink. TPN was given to me through my port for that time an I actually did not loose an ounce! I gargled w/malox and lidocane and lived on that along w/morphine (i acn not have tylenol based pain relivers as it interfears w/the gleevec I take for my GIST, cancer). The morphine was not enough by itself and the lidocane combination did not work by itself, I needed both. It did eventually do away.
