Blood Cell Counts

0 Recommendations

My dad couldn't take chemo thursday because his white cell count was too low...he had a shot saturday and gets another tomorrow. He had to get two units of blood today because his red cell count was low....they check these every week...how does it get so low in a week? I'm worried :(

Did you ever find out what chemo he's on? We can't answer anything without knowing that. Try to find out and let us know. Take care, JC

you know I did...one is Camptosar, and the other is Cisplatin

Going back through your posts, I couldn't find any mention of tx type. Sorry, I have never heard of the camptosar. But I do know the cisplatin is a very hard chemo. Reading up on the camptosar, it says it's used to treat colon and rectal cancers. Both of these are aggressive chemo treatments. Here is a link on the camptosar. I would still call his doctor today and not wait. Take care, JC

Thanks. I hadn't posted it....I wrote it down and researched them. He doesn't have colon or rectal cancer which made me wonder why they are giving it to him. However, through my research I found that sometimes they do give the Cam. to lung cancer patients. Hopefully we will find out more on thursday from the PET scans and hopefully it is working...it's his only hope. He is just so sick all the time and no medicine they have given him has helped. He has also had to go for fluids in the past month for being dehydrated....

My counts were up and down throughout my treatment. I missed several chemos due to this. For me it was normal. My counts could go dangerously low in just couple days after treatment.
Good luck

Another name for Campotsar is Irinotecan and I had it with carbplatin for my SCLC and it was successful. Dr. West on grace posted an article on it being tested in Japan with good results for SCLC. I was glad to see that my Oncologist worked out of the box and not just US trials. It was originally used for the other cancers.

I know that the counts get low...he hadn't had chemo for over a week...they couldn't give it to him..and had to give him TWO units of blood..Is that normal??? and had to give him 2 shots for his white cell count. thankfully he is feeling better...after receiving the blood...UGGG I HATE this disease!!!...I lost my mother unexpectedly to a heart attack, and I'm not sure which is worse watching the man I love suffer so much, or not having time to prepare and so much left unsaid....both are so very very hard.
