Wine

Yesterday I received my shipment of wine from Iron Gate Vineyards in North Carolina--which we were made aware of on this site last week. I had ordered one of each of the four labels whose proceeds will go towards lung cancer research. Haven't tried the wine yet, but the labels are fantastic. Right on the label they state that lung cancer kills nearly twice as many women as breast cancer. They also explain the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership. What a great organization--wish Minnesota had something so progressive.

They don't ship to Maine but I left a thank you note on the 'contact us' page

This is awesome! I'm going to their site right now to see if they ship to Texas. Thanks for posting this.

Just in case there was some "red" wine in your shipment.

Very high doses of antioxidant polyphenols shut down and prevent cancerous tumors by cutting off the formation of new blood vessels needed for tumor growth.

Polyphenols - such as resveratrol - are commonly found in red wine. These compounds are found in the skin and seeds of grapes. When wine is made from these grapes, the alcohol produced by the fermentation process dissolves the polyphenols contained in the skin and seeds.

Red wine contains more polyphenols than white wine because the making of white wine requires the removal of the skins after the grapes are crushed.

Resveratrol is a type of polyphenol called a phytoalexin, a class of compounds produced as part of a plant's defense system against disease. It is produced in the plant in response to an invading fungus, stress, injury, infection or ultraviolet irradiation. Red wine contains high levels of resveratrol, as do grapes, raspberries, peanuts and other plants.

Resveratrol has been shown to reduce tumor incidence in animals by affecting one or more stages of cancer development. It has been shown to inhibit growth of many types of cancer cells in culture. Evidence also exists that it can reduce inflammation. It also reduces activation of NF kappa B, a protein produced by the body's immune system when it is under attack.

Although red wine consumption during chemotherapy or radiation treatment has not been well studied, it is not contraindicated. If a patient already drinks red wine moderately, most physicians would not tell a patient to give it up during treatment.

Perhaps a better choice would be to drink as much red or purple grape juice as desired. But hey! You already have your case of wine. Hopefully, some of it is "red" wine.

Let's get it sent to Kansas. We moonshiners are tired of making horrid hooch. That was a marvelous story to read. Thanks

Hi Im Karen from north east england and a keen wine drinker of the white variety. My hubby has advanced terminal lung cancer and i am keen to spread the word about the need for research into lung cancer research. Could you advise me on how to develop this even from the wine selling point of view in england? I am not usually very good at organising but am picking up tips from your american site and any help or suggestions to further this in my country would be welcome. In America you are so much more proactive than us in Britain in so many ways. I am determined to make this my and my family and friends cause if for nothing for my lovely hubby Kevxxxx

Aloha,

Thanks for the information. I'll look the vineyard up for sure. I am and have been a wine drinker, and I believe it has helped me, I guess because I'm still here, 4 years longer than my Doctor thought! I'm a stage IV, NSCLC and doing all I can to be around as long as possible.

I love wine and hate lung cancer so it seems like a good idea to order from Iron Gate. I'm going to go look it up right now! Thanks~ Linda
