I have been a member of this board for a little less than a year. When my 79 y/o father was diagnosed with Stage 4 NSCLC last November all I knew about LC was old people who smoke alot got it. Since then I have learned a TON!...not only about the disease itself but about the lack of research, funding and new treatments.
Unfortunately, I have also noticed that people on this board are getting much younger. I talk to about 50 docs a week (for my job) and have asked them if they too have noticed this trend. Almost all have said yes, and not just with LC. The consensus seems to bee the lack of "proper" nutrition leading to weaker immune systems. Are you all seeing the same trend here?

Don't forget the environment. And people that smoke are at only a 10% chance of getting LC. It is more prominent because smoking causes other respiratory illnesses. There are many that eat well and take good care of themselves. Everyone has cancer cells, they don't know what causes some to wake up and create havoc. Once they figure that out, cancer will no longer exist. Take care, JC

yes ive noticed that too as i learn more and more about cancer its scary. ive also heard what jc jst mentioned about everyone having cancer cells in their body jst dnt know what causes sum to wake up and sum to not!!

On the main page of this site is a place you can go to see those who have passed on. I was shocked to see some as young as 19 who have passed on. Just doesn't seem fair. Next month is lung cancer awareness. I have gotten two tee shirts and one says Cancer Babe and the other I had made which says I survived lung cancer. I wear them proudly. I am thinking of getting one that says ask me about my scar. I will do anything that is not against the law to get someone to ask me about my disease. Knowledge is power. If you ask a question and do not like the answer ask again, or ask someone different, but keep asking.

Unfortunately, like some other types of cancer, lung cancer has no symptoms in early stage. I am wondering if yearly body screening would help to save more lives.
We are more advance in technologies but limitted in use. :(

nheepdanes,
Where do you find who has passed on?

I also am getting t-shirts printed up for lung cancer awareness month. I am trying to do on with a white ribbon with a set of lungs where the ribbon overlaps with big bold letters "Lung Cancer Awareness" on the top and some fact on the bottom. I am getting at least 5 done and will wear them everyday.

HI, where can I get some of these shirts for myself?

check out Dr. West's reply to early screening. It really shows no survival benefit!

my husband was 28 at diagnosis. never smoker, no risk factors

Yep, Brandon was one of the young ones I was thinking of!

Yes, to poor nutrition, additives, nitrites, etc. And also there is some evidence that increased carcinogenesis in our environment--global warming, carbon monoxide emissions, decreased ozone layer so that ionizing radiation from the sun is increased, pollutants in general, a conglomeration of power lines, etc.

Also, it is interesting to note that an inordinately high number of those diagnosed with cancer have low Vitamin "D," when tested. That doesn't mean to consume toxic doses of Vitamin "D" or get a 3rd degree sunburn but that one should be aware. I am taking supplemental "D" (1000 whatevers), daily.

How about adding to the list, terrorisim? Makes you wonder if this is a virus which I really wouldn't at all doubt they will find it to be. Especially since we always heard it was smoking, and yes, I am seeing more and more younger people with it. Why would this be? I wonder if someone has done something to our environment, we never find out things until years later.
It is strange the things they find that we do have in common in many of us as Hermanade just said above here, like the low Vitamin D, well ya know we are told to stay out of the sun it causes skin cancer, so people did, and then the low Vitamin D, we are told don't drink milk it causes too much mucous, and this is what helps cancer cells survive, you are damned if you do, and damned if you don't.
I don't think any of us know what the answer is.
God bless us all. the cure is coming, i do know in my heart that it is.

My mom's onc told us last year that he was seeing more and more nonsmokers being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Yes , the patients are getting younger and sicker. I truly believe, at least here in NY, that 9/11 has had far more reaching effects than we could ever have imagined. My husband worked a few blocks from the site and never took advantage of the follow up screenings that were offered(never even told me about them till after he was diagnosed).
All that being said, I have to tell you that there is a thoracic surgeon at NYU who believes in screening high risk patient-namely long time smokers-by doing CT screenings(I would imagine yearly like us gals do our mammos). His goal is to diagnose at stage I and cure people. How I wish my dear husband had run into this dr a few years ago. Smoking may not be the cause of all lung cancers-or even most-but at least we can identify a population at higher risk and screen them so that if they have it , it could be detected sooner. Somehow I think this all comes down to insurance $$$.

It's in the air. Chemicals in the enviroment all killing us all. Sometimes peoples system can handle it and other times it can't. I know teens are tired by nature, but I am seeing more and more of the young teens just exhausted everyday. It's not like they are running at school all day. I understand if they have loads of activities that cause them to be tired but my son doesn't. He goes to bed at 9 and wakes at 6. That is 9 hours of sleep. Your right, I am seeing more and more of the young ones getting Lung Cancer and they are non-smokers. How are all these young people who have parents that never smoked, they themselves never smoked, they are not exposed to chemicals, etc, how are they getting Lung Cancer. I just don't get it. Can someone try to explain it to me.

All I've noticed is that I seem to be getting younger :-)

Where on the first page is the list of those that have passed

What is going on? My twin sister, non smoker, 49 passed away 7/09 from lung cancer. I wonder too! She lived 15 minutes from me in a rural environment, was involved in antiques, some very dusty and musty.

Chum, You rock! :)

I am 32 y/o, non-smoker, have no other health problems-went to the doctors regularly, have no risk factors and have always exercised and eaten pretty healthy.
My doctors have said its on the rise in young, healthy people and they can't explain why its happening. They have said its just bad luck that I got this disease-not very comforting. I think in my case, the cancer had a party in my body when I was pregnant and had a baby when my immune system was at its lowest.
I think it also has something to do with the environment, maybe our foods too-so many have preservatives and names that you can't pronounce, plus the use of pesticides on veggies and fruit. Also, all of these new cleaning products with all these different chemicals that they never had before. In the past, people ate their food fresh and used natural, purer things to clean, just my opinion.

Hi..I deeply feel that we need to change our lifestyles early if we want to live longer. Better food, more rest, less stress, cleaner air. We can change our chances, just that most people don't want to..they equate all the bad stuff with having fun. Well, many of us are paying for it now. Cigarettes, alchohol, pre-prepared foods, working in "sick buildings", building our homes so air tight that they cannot "breathe". We used paints and preparations in our daily lives that are not fit to inhale. In many cases, just changing these things early enough will do it. For others, we have to live with what we have done to our immune systems that cannot be readily repaired.

The food we eat is number one on the "To change" list. After all, our bodies are incredible machines, we need to provide these machines with the very best. You would not knowingly put cheap oil or gas into your car without expecting problems, so why would you eat overprocessed foods laced with chemicals more poisonous than Chemotherapy? We are so worried about gaining a pound or two that we substitute empty calories for a good well rounded meal. We don't find the time to cook decent meals for our families..we are all working to keep our heads above water..

Unfortunately we have to be shocked into reality, and a diagnosis of cancer will do it. Now is the time to reevaluate your daily life, and make the changes necessary to keep you healthy. Your children deserve a good breakfast. I see Mothers handing their children something colored blue in the morning that comes out of a toaster.

I have 6 Yorkshire terriers. I do not use dog food. I have never had them go to the vet for anything other than their vaccinations. One of the dogs is going on 19 years old. I will gladly send a picture if you ask for it. How many animals have been poisoned by the food they eat? What makes you think it is any different for us?

You may dislike what I have to say, but I always believed the truth is the way to go. I have a Stage ! growth in my upper right lobe. I have been following it for a year. During a very stressful time in my life, both medically and mentally, it began to grow. It doubled in size in one year. I have not had a biopsy..lungs are not good enough for one. I got back on track with eating well, meditation and enjoying my daily life, and the last scan was day before yesterday. It had not grown since the last scan. I hope my answer to this epidemic of cancer is in the right direction. It has worked for me. I have survived three different kinds of cancer. I must be doing something right. I wish all of you the very best of luck and health. It sounds as if you have tried everything in some cases. Why not get back to basics?

I know I tend to over-simplify. Cancer is a complex disease. However, it still has to overcome a good strong immune system in order to flourish and ravage our bodies. I will fight this horror the way I know how. Hopefully, I can overcome this. I am not young anymore, so I am already dealing with an immune system that is pretty tired of fighting this disease in different forms..However, I do believe it is my only real chance to long lasting recovery.
