What causes the vomiting?

0 Recommendations

My husband is having a lot of problems with nausea and vomiting. His chemo is mild and not supposed to cause this much distress. I'm wondering if it's the pain meds. He's on a lot of pain meds. Has anyone else had a problem with pain meds and nausea?

I do think that pain meds can be responsible for nausea. We've found that we've had to keep readjusting my husband's pain meds as he has done chemo and radiation because, as the various treatments reduce the pain, then the amount of pain meds become too much -- which results in nausea. We usually experiment by cutting back the amount or skipping a dose of the meds to see just how much pain there actually is. Over the past 8 weeks, we've had to cut the meds back to almost nothing as the chemo must be doing its job cleaning up bone mets, so they aren't really needed.

good luck.

I had lots of nausea with oxi-conton (sp) so I don't take it anymore. Good luck...

I was given an antiseisre med for neuropathy. That caused vomiting. Is he taking other meds?

I am not on pain meds for the lung cancer but I have taken pain meds in the codeine family after various procedures. Invariably I would throw up because I would be taking them on an empty stomach. My stomach would be empty because of the nausea, it's a vicious cycle. I can now take some codeine type products if I take a Zofran at least 30 minutes beforehand and eat a few crackers or something similar. Hope this helps and I hope he can get some relief from the pain and the nausea. Jane

Does your husband have Rx for Emend, Zofran, Dexamthasone or Phenergan? These are good for nausea, plus he can get some rest. Is he able to eat anything? The pain meds may have made him sick if he doesn't eat.
I hope he feels better soon. Hope this helps.

Tazzy, he isn't able to eat much at all. He does have dexamthasone but it's not helping all that much. Janiegirl, I'll try to get him to eat some crackers so he won't be taking the meds on an empty stomach. Because of the location of his tumor he's in a incredible amount of pain so I have to find someway for him to stay on the pain meds and still eat. Thanks all.

..what's the chemo ?

..what's the radiation dosages ?

...ok, if it's a plat-type chemo then this really screws the system, if you are unlucky, and there really is little you can do, take stronger anti-nausea, yeah but then you need anti-anti-nausea, but it might work..

..i only had chemo, and that cisplatin was shit-on-wheels, so after the treatment i just stopped eating, 7-10 days then got my wife to work with me on what i could eat, and so as soon as she could, or rather as soon as i could, i pigged on the safe food..

.."safe food" for me, please note, for me..fresh, clean, and to a large degree the food i ate as i child. For me that was fine, altho have you ever tried getting a decent Sheperd's Pie or Cornish Pasty in the Southern Philippines ?..joke..

..over time it became clear, following tests, ie i didn't puke, or spend the night "poised over the porcelain" that fresh was very important, a dodgy lettuce could give me a whole nights mmm ' pleasure" ' fresh green chiles were no hassle..

..so go along with him, test the stuff, and whatever he can eat, s'cool, what he can't, just don't ....

..if he knows how to fast following the treatements, green tea or black real coffee, or for some reason red wine. for me, then fine...

..vomiting, squits, and the lack of desire to eat aren't always a lack of will to live, they may just be that the food is wrong

..please note...fasting should only be undertaken if you know what you are doing, or under the control of an expert, and you should always inform your medical team..

I have to recommend the drug for all nausea is Emend. That had to be the miracle drug for me while going thru my very first chemo in Feb 2005. I was very sick from the cisplatin and it was horrible. I had bad nausea, body aches, and all symptoms of the flu which was totally 100 xs worse than the flu. I was also going thru radiation at the same time.

So if your husband does still experience the nausea please have him ask for the Emend. You take it the first day of the infusion about 1 hr before at 125 mg. then for the next two days you take it at 80 mg. then that's it. Only 3 pills and you feel great as far as nausea goes. At least I did. I am currently on it now and I am not taking any chances. I do not have one sign of nausea. My stomach is fine.

Good luck
and may God Bless him and of course you too
Linda
