I would like to recommend that you go to cancergrace.org and post this question. They are cancer specialist and would be much more reliable.
Take care, JC

To a certain extent, it would depend on how the surgery was done. If they used the VATS technique, it should not be as painful (at least that is my experience). As far as the "trouble breathing," I had trouble walking up even small hills quickly until three or four months into my recovery. If it is painful breathing, that's another matter entirely. It did not pain me to take breathes - but it was hard to exert myself until later.

Thank you.

Just wondering if he has an incentive spriometer to use to expand his lung? Also is he taking pain medications around the clock. If it is still fairly new after surgery, maybe before he gets up, and is active it would be good to take something for the discomfort, i also think this should be checked out in case their is infection going on in the lung. Does he have a fever, or any other symptoms, if so get him right in, it is so easy to develop a pneumonia after surgery if he is not moving enough, or if he isn't drinking enough fluids,.the best is to get him up to walk and get moving, and if the pain is that bad he can't do this, then there is something wrong. I would call the doc tomorrow and have him seen, unless you think i tis something that needs more immediate attention, then get the ambulance and get him in to the ER.
Good luck, Sandy

I had vats last August and I still have breathing issues and some surgical site issues. It is said that the nerves are damaged and take a long time to heal. My breathing has gotten better but I still get out of breath doing some of the harder chores and gardening.
