LCA-NE advocate John Atkinson is a finalist in the Golf Digest US Open Contest! Vote for him today!

LCA is proud and excited to announce that John Atkinson, LCA-Nebraska Chair, is one of the five finalists in the Golf Digest US Open Contest!

John entered the contest in January, writing a 100 word essay describing why he could break 100 at Torrey Pines before the US Open. His good friend, Terry Beutler also submitted an essay about John. There were over 56,000 entrants and five finalists remain today.

Now America has a chance to vote for its favorite. The contest winner will get to play on national television with NBC Today Show host, Matt Lauer, Dallas Cowboy’s quarterback, Tony Romo and recording artist and former member of N’Sync, Justin Timberlake on Friday, June 6th. The golf course, Torrey Pines, will be set up just as the pros will play it during the US Open.

To vote for John, please go to www.gdopencontest.com . Voting begins on March 28th and lasts for a month. You can also read about John in the May issue of Golf Digest available April 1st or March 28th's New York Times.

John started swinging the clubs when he was only 15 years old. It took him about six years to really get serious about the game. John has been playing golf for over twenty years, but this past year has been the most impactful.

John was diagnosed on March 29, 2007 with Stage 4 inoperable adenocarcinoma--non-small cell lung cancer. An otherwise healthy 39 year old never smoker, John was shocked by the diagnosis, but remained determined to beat the disease.

He has been married for 13 years and is a father of three children. What will he do? How will he cope with the physical and emotional stress of fighting lung cancer? He turned to golf.

John was able to apply lessons he learned on the course, to real time situations in ways he had never expected. Golfing taught him patience and confidence. He learned how to focus on the goals ahead and make it through 18 holes, not stopping until he had finished.

Golfing gave John a chance to reconnect with family and friends and share laughter and putting tips. His love for the game has never been stronger.

These life lessons combined with John's strong faith and a strong will to beat this disease have propelled him through the year. He has been undergoing treatment in a clinical study at Methodist Hospital in Omaha. His cancer has remained stable this past year.

John will show America what is possible, even when faced with a life altering disease.

In the words of golfer Arnold Palmer, "I've always made a total effort, even when the odds seemed entirely against me. I never quit trying; I never felt that I didn't have a chance to win."

Hi Amy,
I voted and sent to all of my friends. What a wonderful story and encouraging. I hope it does help spread the word about lung cancer. Thanks for giving us an opportunity to help.

I am already getting responses from the people I work with - they are voting and will continue to do so as they want to win ne of the prizes - I know every one of them would love to go to Torrey Pines - it is a beautiful course in LaJolla, CA.

Together, we can make this happen for John and most of all for LC awareness.

Miracles & blessings to all . . .

Anyone-

How do you find out where the current voting stands...I couldn't find it on the golf digest website...

Wendy

Hi Wendy,

I think the only way to see the count is to vote, so when you go online to vote tomorrow, you can see the standings. :-) Unless someone has just voted recently and can share??

Amy

Vote as of 3:33 pm 10,153 Kathy

Vote as of 7:59am- 10,910

He's over 11,000 now. And the next closest guy is around 3,000. :-) It's nice that people find John's story to be so compelling. I sent the email out to my personal email list and got several responses from people that made it sound like it's got people thinking about this much more than they had before.

Oh - and don't forget to vote again today! And tomorrow! And the next day!!!

Done - will do every day and emailed it to everyone I could. He's way ahead - let's keep it that way!

WOW ! ! ! I just voted for today and saw the 11,000 + votes. It's amazing how word travels and the support we can get by word of mouth.

I'll vote every day as will others I know.

Miracles & blessings . . .

Kathy
