Wal-Marts Response about LC Awareness Month

1 Recommendation

A few months ago, I sent out a mass mailing to big box stores asking them to ask their customers if they want to donate $1.00 to help fund lc research during LC Awareness Month. In this packet that I sent out there was a list of different organizations that work for lc. This is their response.

We have Received your recent request for financial assistance. We regret to inform you that we are unable to directly fund individuals.

The Walmart Foundation funds 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in the communities we serve that have an awareness of local needs and the ability to implement solutions that impact a large number of individuals with the help of our funding.

We wish you the best of luck in your endeavors.

Sincerely,
The Walmart Foundation

Next year I am going to go directly to the Walmarts just in my area. Next year I think I am just going to try and raise money for the University of Nebraska Medical Center. I just found out this week that they are doing research on early detection of lung cancer. I realize now that I have bitten off too big of a chunk and before I chock on it, I am going to scale down and just keep it within Nebraska. Maybe then I will be able to make a difference.

Blessings,
Barb

Barb, I think you'd need the backing of a LC non-profit, like LCA. I think they could assist you with the information and where the donations go and how they are used. Good luck next year. Take care, JC

Bless you for all your efforts - I think you're terrific. Your enthusiasm got me going, and while I may not be too successful, I feel good to be doing something.

Alice,
I know what you mean about feeling good. I have gotten numerous "No" responses, but I will not let it stop me. It feels good to have something to be passionate about.

JC,
I know what you mean about having someone "backing" me. That is why I am thinking about helping UNMC with their funding for early detection. UNMC is a name everyone here respects and knows. Who knows what I will do in 2011.

We need to get the public aware that lung cancer kills more women than breast, colon and gyn cancers combined. The problem, I think, is the blame/shame syndrome LC patients suffer from. My mother was well into her 30's when she began smoking - the age of Virginia Slims and all that. My dad started in the Navy during WW II where the gov't handed out smokes. Their generation was brainwashed by movies and ads promoting cigarettes and the truth was buried by the industry while the gov't paid subsidies to tobacco farmers.

I know what you mean about getting the public's attention. I wrote to state and federal Congress and asked them to wear white ribbons in Nov. Maybe if we all ban together and bombard Congress with letters, we'll get more attention but as for retailers - I just can't see them putting up white ribbons at the front end when that were they sell the poison that kills so many.

Maybe we can start with Health Food stores.

Madwife,
It never even crossed my mind about the stores like Walmart not wanting to support us becuase they sell cigeretts. Holly crap. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Have to change tactics.
My new motto: Still breathing, still fighting.

You might want to check out my daughter's profile on Team Inspire....it's JJW. She is starting a program and already has almost 600 members and it just started 3 days ago. She lives in Omaha and has many contacts. She is a former reporter and now in PR. The name of the program is WTF? (Where's The Funding) for lung cancer. She is doing this because of me, her mom and all the others suffering from this terrible disease. She will do all she can to make her voice heard. This page is on Face Book and there are already several people from LCA as members.

You might also want to check out the National Lung Cancer Partnership. They have a great program called Free to Breathe where they will help you with events in your area that will raise awareness and funds for LC. I am organizing a F2B 5K Run/Walk for November 8 -- they totally are supporting the marketing, registration, printing, etc -- very plug and play -- there are 15 events this year nationally, all started by people like us. They have made it really (relatively) easy. So far I have about 200 registrants for Sunday, and we have raised about $20,000. Not bad for a first time event!

Walmart, safeway, target.......shame on you.....
Still, all I see is PINK everywhere I go. Ask them why pink and NOT clear!
Corporate bastards!

Bill

You are SO right bayrealtor. My husband went to Safeway yesterday....we are in November now and when he checked out with the credit/debit card machine, a message popped up asking if you want to donate to breast cancer. I only wish I had been there. I am so disgusted I can't even begin to find the words to express how I feel.
