Update, and a new question on my mom 57 years just diagnosed w/ lung cancer

0 Recommendations

Hi everyone! Thanks for all your posts you really helped alot. I have a new question though! I wish I would have read the web site faster, because of you guys you told me about vats but my moms doctor had never done it before and by the time I found out about it she was 5 days away from surgery, and she just wanted it over with. She had the surgery this past Thurs. They removed the whole upper left lobe, and the surrounding nodes. She went into ICU thurs evening and the Dr was positive. he said he didn't think any thing had spread but we have to wait for the pathology report. She was in alot of pain though the first night, and second. this past Sunday she was doing much better. she wasn't in agony untill the Dr came in and tried to take out one of her 3 chest tubes. He pulled and nothing happened, he tried again and still nothing. he said he had never seen that before he had only read about it, and he would try again the next day, but my mom saw stars she said. So now it is Mon my mom is still in ICU, and the Dr comes in again this morning and tries to remove the chest tube and still can't so he tells us that he has to put her in the OR and open up a small part of her incision to get the tube out. 20 min he tells us it will take. They took my mom at 1:10pm the Dr didn't come out till 3pm he said that he tried opening a small part of her incision and still couldn't get the tube out so he had to open the entire incision and when he did that the tube just popped out. He says he still doesn't know why it wouldn't come out. then she stayed in recovery for another 3 hrs, and now is finally back in ICU tomm is 6 days in ICU, and now she has to re heal . Has anyone heard of such a thing??? I will update with the pathology report as soon as I know. Thanks again for all your support......

Thanks Gina

Gina, I've never heard of this but I suppose it's possible. If they are telling you this I'm going to say it must be real. Look at the bright side if the doctor had seen something such as spread I am sure he wouldn't have told you what he did. So be thankful your Mom is now healing and I pray doing alright. She's where she needs to be and soon she'll be perfect again soon. - John

This is my first time hearing this since I had a VATS surgery 2 times. I feel for your mom. I had my surgery when I was 47 and healed much faster. They had me doing a boot camp before my surgery. I had to walk a lot before the surgery so the healing process would be easier for me. Now the second surgery was harder for me and it was only a wedge resection. I had more pain and stayed in the hospital longer than the first time and that was a lobectomy.

Just be grateful that she is okay and not in that much pain. It takes a long time for recovery. So don't be surprised if she complains of pain in certain areas of her chest and her side. That is normal. I had a lot of that. I am now suffering from nerve pain and on medication from that. This does not mean your mom is going to be suffering from that. Everyone is different. Just pray for your mom's recovery everyday that she will be fine.

God bless
Linda

Gina,

There is quite a bit of reading you might want to do on a WEB site such as post- surgery lung tube removal--

I am no doctor, but what happened sounds a little strange--??

I expect others will know more about this than I do--I just hope your Mom is feeling loads better soon.

Barbara

hope your mom is doing better my mom had the same surgery right upper lobe removed she has had a few set backs but getting stronger everyday. this is a tough surgery and takes time to get over keep encouraging her that tomorrow will be better
