update from the hospital on momma

Alrighty everyone. It's been a few days, just wanted to update everyon on moms stay in the hospital. Its been a hard few days with lots of what ifs in there heres the info. Friday she came in and needed blood so they gave her 2 units and started iv fluids. They had her on a clear liquid diet to start with. Saturday she was moved to a soft diet. She's been handling the food they throw at her pretty well. Friday to sunday she did not throw up at all which is so awesome but had a fluck throw up spell last night. no clue where that came from. We talked about a feeding tube but Onc said as long as she's eating and showing stable and progress on how she feels then he doesnt want to do the feeding tube. On Sunday the doc came in and told us he was worried cause her red blood count started dropping again so he wanted to check urine and stool samples. This morning he came in scratching his head cause all blood levels were back to normal along with all organ enzymes. I asked if we could weigh her seeing as she came in at 76.6 lbs. I didnt expect more than maybe a pound or 2 but she has gained 12 lbs over the weekend. up to 88.5 lbs. Doc ordered a physical therapist to come help her work up her leg strength cause at this point her legs are soooo weak. My biggest worry is no her MRI that she's gonna have done today. First one since brain surgery and WBR. We are so worried somethings gonna show. I hope it is still clear. Dr said he's sure it prob is clear just wants to update but really he cant see through her head and know for sure. Just yet another worry. At least we are getting some good news

When my mom couldn't eat/wouldn't eat. The Dr said.. she can't have an I.V and force someone to eat. I was like WTF???!! so, because, she can't eat cause the cancer made her lose her appetite we just have to watch her die and starve to death?????

Finally he mentioned a PIC ( not sure how it's spelled ) but it was really to late by that time.

Is your mom getting a I.V feeding tube or a PIC?

neither. at this point the IV is just Sodium cloride solution and she's been eating regular meals. The onc didn't rule out the PEG tube which is the feeding to straigh into the abdomin just said as long as she's eating he doesnt want to do it. He didn't rule it completely out tho just a lost resort type of thing. When mom saw she gained 12 lbs she smiled bigger than i've seen her smile in a while

Hi Kally,
It seems to good to be true that your mom gained 12 pounds over a weekend.......it may be fluid gain.....

I would still try to get her a PEG, .....She can eat food by mouth with it also.....and you will know she is getting the calories she needs with the feeding tube.
She needs to regain her strength to fight this battle......
Hopefully, her MRI was clear. Praying for you and your mom. God Bless. Mary

Krystal,
Glad your mom is doing better! :) Let me know how her MRI results come out! A feeding tube may be the way to go.

Both my parents have a port. The oncologist request that all his patients have one. It makes life a lot easier. My dad has started eating more. The onc may still do a feeding tube on my dad. We are going to see how he does this round of chemo.

I don't know how my mom is going to react to her chemo. She just had her first treatment today.
