SUPPORT GROUPS IN FLORIDA - BROWARD CNTY

0 Recommendations

Mom passed away almost three weeks ago from Stage IV NSCLC. I am devastated and cry all the time. My doctor put me on some meds so its a tiny bit better. I am looking for a support group in Florida - Broward County. This is not so easy to find. I have been all over the internet and can't find anything. If anyone knows of anything I would be grateful for the advise.

Thanks.

Julie

Dear Julie

I am sorry, the closest Wellness community to you is in Miami.

Ok, this is going to sound like a commercial, but the Wellness Community has chapters all over the US. They are excellent, the sessions are ran by licensed professionals who donate their time. And it is all free?

They typically have 3 groups:

  1. Participant group (these are people with cancer)
  2. CareGiver group
  3. Bereavement group

But they have so much more. They might offer Tai-chi, Yoga, mind body relaxation sessions, and other special session. It is worth the long drive, if it is not too long to get there.

My sympathies - try Gilda's Club in Ft. Lauderdale - maybe they can help

One last further comment. If you can not drive that far, I would call them (the wellness community in Miami) anyway; because they would know and have all the phone numbers of other groups doing the same thing. If anyone could tell you where in Broward county they could.

Thank you so much for your support. I am going to call them Monday morning. I have found this site to be amazing. Miami is a bit too far for me.

Thank you for responding. I am going their on Wednesday night with a friend to see what it's all about. Have you been there?

Hi Julie,

I sent you a separate email. I read your postings and feel like I could have written them.
Its been 27 short days without my mom. I am also looking into counseling or a Support
Group. Too bad we're on opposite ends of the country. I'm in California. Check your
other email. Talk to you soon - Elizabeth

Hi Julie, I just read your post and it was from last year, however i have been having some chalanges over the last year but I'm kicking butt again, this is not about me it's about a support group. I have been very active in Gildas Club in Ft Lauderdale, which has been more than i could have asked for. Do yourself a big favor and contact them ASAP. Just for starters I am the longest living survivor of Stage 1V lung cancer
in the world that is on the Avastin trial.

Be well

It looks like you received some good suggestions, but I might add one more; Hospice. Even if you weren't involved with Hospice they offer support groups for anyone grieving. I'm sure there would be a Hospice in Broward.

I lost my Mom on October 6 and I know how hard it is. I try to have my meltdowns every other day now. Your Mom, and mine, wouldn't want this for us. They'd want us to remember them in our hearts and move forward. I know it seems impossible, but I try really hard to do this. Try to stay busy, it helps me a lot.

Good luck finding the support you're looking for.

Check with Funeral Homes or Hospital Social Workers, they usually have a list of Grief Support Groups in the area.

At Inspire here they have a Bereavement Group. Go check it out. I know there are a lot of Grief Support Groups on the Internet too.

What your going through is very normal. Grief will run it's course and things WILL get softer for you as time goes on. Allow yourself to grieve.

My husband and I have been active with Gilda's Club in Ft. Lauderdale for over 5 yrs. They are closed thru the holidays but PLEASE call after the 1st. Tell them your situation and ask for a calender and apt. You won't be sorry for going there. It really is the best!
