Don’t blanch just yet. Prepared correctly, soy can taste sublime. Certain kinds, like tofu, easily take on the flavor of whatever you cook with. And research suggests that some extra tofu or edamame in your diet may slash your risk of pulmonary diseases to boot.

Tasty Airway Protection
Specifically, early research shows that eating soy foods is associated with a reduced risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). That’s a category of lung ailments that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. In one recent Japanese study, those with the highest intakes of soy foods not only had lower risk of COPD but also had better overall lung function. Here’s another food that lungs love.

A Controversial Food?
There’s a ton of conflicting evidence about the health benefits of soy. But as a whole food, it really is tops when it comes to nutrition. Low-fat, high fiber, high protein -- all good things.

Here's another part of a different article on the same subject.
It's difficult to tell whether the results of this study are population specific. Hopefully, more studies will be done to confirm whether soy foods are good for lung health in all populations. If so, they could provide additional lung protection for people at high risk for lung diseases such as COPD or who are ex-smokers. Until then, soy foods can be a good substitute for animal based protein in those who aren't at high risk of breast cancer or hypothyroidism.

Good source of protein unless one's cancer has estrogen receptors. My understanding is that soy is a phytoestrogen (made by a plant) and can "feed" an estrogen receptor positive cancer----like breast cancer and some other cancers.

I think the phytoestrogen in soy acts in a natural way with the ability to detect what the balance of your hormones are and should be and has a natural balance whether you are a male or female. I don't have the article handy but I read it quite a while ago where it explains how soy adapts naturally to your hormone levels and doesn't force its will in any unnatural way and because of this it should be safe in cases of breast or prostate issues.

Except that I have already had breast cancer and must avoid allllllll estrogens of any kind, and take meds to block all estrogen. And now there is some thought that some lung cancers are similar???
