Today I found out I got shingles. But that's ok. If that's the worst I can deal with it.

Cancer Gabapentin Pain Blisters Acyclovir

Jen:

If you have a case of shingles around the costal nerve it can be very painful. Besides an antiviral, you can also get Gabapentin that will relieve those shooting pains. Last October I had a terrible case of them. If they give you trouble don't suffer. There is medication.

About 25 years ago, I had a case of them but that was nothing compared to this last case.
I will pray tonight that yours are not too painful.
Much Love,
Marylou

Hi Marylou,

Thank you. I did see my onc today. I never had shingles before and didn't know what to expect. I spoke to his nurse and she got me in to see him. About 2 weeks I saw him to get my ct results and I told him that my underarms were sore. He said there was no swelling and nothing was on the scans by my underarms. Well by this weekend it got a little worse and my shoulder blade and rib cage was a little sore. Then yesterday I saw a little rash on my side and shoulder blade. That's when I called. He gave me acyclover as the antiviral med. I take those 5 times a day for 7 days. I didn't want any pain meds yet.

I do go back in on June 29 for a follow up ct scan so I am praying to god that it comes up ned.

Thank you for all your info and support. It means so much being here.

Yeah, I, too have had them - when I was 19!! They weren't too painful for me. I hope the meds work well!

I had them as well on my left thigh. I had no clue what they were. went to pcp and she gave me the medication. Ouch, they hurt!!!!!

Hi my husband got some little bumps on his arm on monday... then they started preading... i thought maybe he had too much exposeure to the sun since he had his arm out the car... they are only on the top of his left arm...and some on the top of his right hand
but it did not go any farther ..right now they are still there ...says they itch a little.. will that stop him from getting the last of his chemo?

God bless

HI Mikestratton,

I don't know if the bumps would stop hubby from getting chemo but please call your doctor and let him know. He would make the call on that. I am not on chemo or radiation at this time.

I was diagnosed too late to get acyclovar and shingles is really hurting. Yes, gabapentin does help, but this nasty stuff stops me much more than the cancer.

What caused it to be to late for the acyclovar? I already started the "breakout" of the blisters and they gave it to me. I do agree it is nasty.

My internist said one should see a physician at the first sign of burning pain (even before the rash.) Although I had been complaining to the oncologist, he missed the diagnosis because the pain (for me) was weeks before the rash and he kept looking for a rash. I am somewhat upset with the onc, but then I realize they do specialize. When the internist saw me, he said there are cases that do not break out. that he sees them every day! Eventually, I did get a rash. Needless to say, I am not having fun!

It is my understanding that it is never too late for acyclovir. The medicine helps to hold the shingles or herpes in check. Acyclovir does work whether at the first sign or after a breakout of shingles or herpes. There are some possible side effects listed that might occur after taking the medicine. You need to be aware of it. Ask that doctor again why he isn't prescribing acyclovir. You shouldn't have to suffer with the pain.

How long did the outbreaks last for some of you?

Trying to get an idea on how long mine will last.

Thanks,

Jen
