what can I expect my husband has lung cancer 3cm and tumor in brain about size of walnut treated with radiation 10 treatments pet scan came back clear bone scan came back clear liver exam normal with a level enzine above normal cat scan didn't show much shrinkage after radiation treatments 3 weeks after treatments but he can use his hand and arm now so chemo begins soon port was put in 4 days ago I didn't know if they wait for site to heal or jump right in ? Anyone with similar situation. The oncologist doesn't spend alot time with patients mostly nurse contact, is this common ? I almost feel he herds the cancer patients in like cattle. We are in rural Mississippi low income but don't qualify for any help did apply for disability don't know the outcome of that for months. Not alot of choices for medical treatment and I have to work to keep insurance active I don't have but 3 paid days left. Chemo will start within the week. Any advise

It sounds like he is doing pretty good to me, I think for you with having to work and trying to do all that is required of you will be hard. This is a good spot for you to write your feelings out and let some of us try and help you. If he has lung cancer , he will get disability, no doubt, but you can speed this process up by contacting the governor of your state, you can e-mail the governor and tell him your dilemma and that you have applied for social security disability and need the money as soon as possible. Tell him honestly how hard this is on your family financially and please help you. It will speed up the process of his claim. You will not have to wait a whole year before getting paid if you listen to what I am telling you to do. It has worked for many people I know.
You are right about the oncologists not spending much time, I don't think they have much time between patients, but if you are really not satisfied with this one you can get a second opinion and switch doctors if you feel you should. This doctor you have sounds as if he knows what he is doing, from what you have said he has shown good outcome from just the radiation, so I bet he will be one to go into a remission, one never knows but if he has got use back in his arm already, this is a great sign that it is in fact working, and something to be very happy about. My husband had sclc and was given 3 months to live, he lived almost 6 years and he didn't doe from cancer, it was from a complication from the cancer but not of it. so today we have a good chance of longer survivals than we ever dreamed. i also am a survivor of just about 3 years. In october of this year it will be 3 years sionce all my treatments ended. i was diagnosed in Feb 2006, so I also am in a remission i have non small cell lung cancer.
Good luck, and god bless. Sandy.

Hi. I was diagnosed 09/08 of sclc. I did the chemo and radiation and now have NO CANCER. The port should be usable right away. Dealing with social security is tough. An accountant told me the key is to get your doctor to write a letter saying that your condition is expected to end in death. I know it sounds harsh but they are required to expedite your case if that verbage is used. It works!
