rib pain

I was wondering if anyone else has had the problem of pain to the bottom / side of the rib cage. My last scan did come back with new mets to the clavical area and the right adrenal gland. It is on my right side, but doc said he didn't think it was related to adrenal gland.
Vivodin is not working.

Hi Julie,
My mom has been having pain in her right side- sounds like the same area -between the ribs and hip bone. She had xrays-MRI-CTscan. CT showed spot on a vertebrae and they said her lung tumor had grown. Dont know if its related to the pain or not. hope to see the onc in the AM. I,ll let you know what he says.

Thanks, I had no mets to bones so I'm curious.

Yes, I did - they did a CT Scan and said it showed I have five fractured ribs so they concluded there was mets to bones - no other test done. I have had very little pain there for the past six months and wonder if it didn't happen after many bouts of bad coughing!

I am new to this and have been reading through different discussions to find some type of answers or ways I can help Mum. She has battled cancer now for 5 years, after radiation was succesful for her. Mum has had 18 months remission however it looks like the fight is yet to begin again. Mum often complains that her ribs are sore and the Doctors always say it is radiation scaring that causes tghtness between the ribs and damage to the cartilage. I am not sure if this will help you but I have been doing it with Mum and it seems to give her relief, Vicks (Not sure if that is in America or not?) rubbed over the back, side and front and then a wheat bag for warmth, sometimes the spasms grab her and wehave found this helps. I hope it does you also. Cheers

I have always assumed mine was pleurisy which occurs when the double membrane (pleura) that lines the chest cavity and surrounds each of your lungs becomes inflamed. Also called pleuritis, pleurisy typically causes sharp pain, almost always during the act of breathing.

One layer of the pleura overlies each lung. The other layer lines the inner chest wall. The two layers of pleura are like two pieces of smooth satin rubbing against each other with almost no friction, allowing your lungs to expand and contract when you breathe without any resistance from the lining of the chest wall.

When inflamed, the two layers of the pleural membrane in the affected side of your chest rub against each other, producing the pain of pleurisy when you inhale and exhale. Between breaths, you feel almost no pain.

Pleurisy occurs as a complication of a wide variety of underlying conditions. Relieving pleurisy involves treating the underlying condition, if it's known, and taking pain relievers.

I just know there are days/weeks where I don't dare think about deep breaths or sneezing!

Hi Julie, Beneath your ribs on the right side could be your liver. The good news is that your liver doesn't feel pain. Sometimes though when it swells it will push against something and cause pressure or pain...Just keep in mind that I usually don't know what I am talking about....Your Friend, BIRDY

Well my liver is free of mets. Can't seem to get a straight answer from the doc, he says it "could" be adrenal gland.
Thanks gang
Julie

Mike has pain on the right side at the bottom of his ribs and we always assumed it was the mets to the liver. Ibuprophen takes care of it for him.

I had right side pain, which is originally what led to my diagnosis. I thought I had a broken rib. My tumors were found only in my lungs and regional lymph nodes (only...ha!). Once I began chemo, the pain almost instantly subsided (and they were only reduced a bit).

I think pain comes from a million sources for a million reasons. There have been times during treatment that I have had an increase in pain and I have been certain that there was growth or spread, and there hasn't been yet. Pain is such a mysterious thing.

Obviously, keep pressing for an answer, because you know your body. But try not to worry too much.

My Mom complains about pain in the same area. They have her on Methodone 5mg morning & night. Also, Doladid & Motrin. My Dad's nervous that she will get hooked on the meds... but the Dr says to give her whatever it takes to make the pain go away. I don't believe we've ever gotten a straight answer regarding this pain. But it comes & go's.

I have had pain similar , only my pain is about 6 inches to the right of my belly button , I had a scrotal ultra sound , an abdominal ultra sound and a full CT scan, the results were my liver is expanding , now to find out WHY ! ?

I drink beer , very rarely hard alcohol and I don't drink beer every day or a lot of it , so i don't think it will be from drinking , last night I woke up with a new pain in a different area , this pain is right belo0w my lower rib on the right side , it is kind of a sharp pain and I mostly notice it when I breath in , the pain is not too severe though .

I have an appt for a colonoscopy next week to see what is going on in there , which I'm sure for many is not the most exciting procedure :)

But it hasto be done, I have had this pain next to my belly button for around 3 months , the pain under the rib is new and my doctor don't even know about that yet, i will let him know of the newest pain Tuesday when see him .

I have looked for symptoms like mine online and the possibilities are as long as my arm , so that is not much help , just makes me worry more when I see them related to some type of cancer .

I am a chimney sweep and I inhale a lot of garbage all day long , it is my understanding chimney sweeps develope testicular cancer at a very high rate , but my doctor ruled that out with the Scrotal ultra sound .

Boy was that FUN !!!
I guess to look on the bright side , at least I am not a female , where tests like this are a lot more common , I don't know if I would go to see my doctor , knowing some of the procedures my wife has to get done all the time .

I will let you guys know of any outcome with my situation and I will put you all in my prayers , because I feel it is very important , especially because I don't even know any of you guys, but I don't need to know you , you're in pain and have problems and prayers can help , especially if you believe .

It is good to be able to talk about it somewhere and maybe find others that may have similar feelings /problems .

P.S. I am really not looking forward to this colonoscopy :)

Colonoscopy- - - don't sweat the small stuff. Seriously it is not all that bad. I made 2 trips to the ER this week. I'll trade anyday! My pain has progressed in area and intensity. They did a CT, MRI, ultrasound, and some other test I've never heard of. What do I get. They shake their heads. I was going to do a journal when my head gets out of the clouds, but suffice it to say I am on at home hospice. Hoping for the best holiday I can have.
P.S. Your post made me chuckle. Thanks
Julie
