Relay for Life

1 Recommendation

I attended an American Cancer Relay for Life in Coppell Texas yesterday. Was impressed. Walked with the survivors. Saw very little pink and every cancer was represented. I also handed out informatiin on Lung cancer the biggest cancer killer, hoping we can reach more people this way. Hugs Nita

Hi Nita!!!!

Thank you so much. The only "cancer walks" we get in northeast ohio is the Susan B. Koman Breast Cancer Walk. I wish there would be a cancer walk for the other cancers. I am in remission with sclc. Do you have any info on where or how to get one started?

Jen

It was put on by our American Cancer Society. I sure want to see some dedicated to just lung cancer, but this was nice as it represented all cancers and suvivors were men, women, children and all of all ages. Click on the Lung Cancer Alliance at the top right of this page and navigate to various information. and in addition the American Cancer Society is at (my daughter's page, but you can navigate from there. http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY09PL?px=9279115&pg=pers onal&fr_id=17454&fl=en_US&s_tafId=289515

It is a great feeling to participate in these. Hugs

we have our relay In may in

I am glad someone mentioned the Relay for Life. I am trying to get some postcards from Lungcancer alliance.org , out to the Relays. They steer people to this site and then those people can contact their Senators about s332, a bill for funding lung cancer research( just google s332). If anyone has contact with their local Relay, I will send postcards to you. Maybe you can have them turned into flyers by copying both sides on one page. I am having no luck with my local American Cancer Society so maybe we can do this ourselves.

Hi Nita,
There's actually a nationwide Lung Cancer 5K Run/Walk series called "Free to Breathe" that 100% benefits lung cancer research, and there happens to be an event in Toledo on August 29th of this year!
You can visit the website www.freetobreathe.org or you can contact the Toledo organizer LouAnn Cummings directly at Cummings@findlay.edu for more information. This year, they're apparently having a motorcycle rally as well as the 5K run and walk!
These events are a great way to do something good for lung cancer, but also to connect with others who've been touched by the disease.
Good luck!
Julia

This is great. On the site I gave for the Relay my daughter was in (which is American Cancer Society) , you can actually set up your own team for those occasions and pick the cancer you want to promote at the relay. This allows you to do a team page (each member of your team) to raise money, then they furnish the survivor shirts, etc. The Team does their own shirts to promote whatever Cancer they are walking for. You set up a station by the track and can give out your information on Lung cancer.
I also just ordered the pins - you can buy individual or buy several... This is the info I received for the pins www.lungcanceralliance.org, you can choose to donate online. Fill out the online form as you normally would, however in the honor/memorial section, please list Lung Cancer Pins as the individual. If you do not have access to the website, or would like to pay by check, please mail a check or credit card information (along with your return address, name, # of pins) to

Lung Cancer Alliance
PO 630972,
Baltimore, MD 21263

Pins are $5/each for up to 24. Pins are $2/each if you purchase 25 or more.

Pins will be mailed standard USPS and will arrive in a 4-5 days unless otherwise indicated.

note: you can also go to the media info, etc., and find flyers you can print off.

Well, that was a lot of ranting, if you don't understand, you can email me Ettietx@aol.com Hugs

Thank you, maybe we can keep this going so people will learn ways to get involved and know when events are happening and/or how start their own team. Your input was great. Looks like I need to get Texas on the ball. Hugs, Nita

Jen,
I actually meant for the post I put about the Toledo event to be directed towards you, if you're interested in a local event that's already happening that benefits lung cancer. Feel free to contact Louann and she'd be happy to tell you more.
If you need further info, feel free to message me directly.
Thanks,
Julia

Nita, thank you for sharing that info about the American Cancer Society. I have a question. While they allow you to promote lung cancer with t-shirts, pins etc, do they actually allow you to direct the money you raise to go towards lung cancer research? Traditionally, the American Cancer Society has not been very supportive of lung cancer and I'm curious if that has changed.
Thanks!
Julia

All the donations are done on line so most likely divided between them all. However, being able to set up around the track and give out information is fantastic, as the ignorance on Lung Cancer is very sad. If you buy pins to give out at the All cancer rally, you would be buying them from the Lung Cancer Alliance, so that is a donation for just the lung cancer. They get cheaper to buy in bulk so you can make a little profit to donate back yourself. It does sound like the Lung Cancer Alliance also has rally's, but I haven't yet looked into them and would appreciate any ifo.

Thanks for the clarification, Nita! You're so right that people need to become more aware of the realities of lung cancer and thank you for all that you do.
Best,
Julia

Hey, I just got an email from Lung cancer alliance and she sent me this address LCA has a Cause on Facebook and donations can be made.

causes.com/lungcanceralliance.org

Just search for Lung cancer and then yoou can put the one you want on your facebook page. Donations will go straight to lung cancer.

Lung Cancer Alliance is an amazing organization (they started this group for us!) and they do incredible things like get the Department of Defense to give $20 million to lung cancer research. They also have great patient support (like this site!) and fantastic awareness building programs.
In terms of 5Ks runs and walks, the two biggest organizations that do those for lung cancer specifically are the aforementioned Free To Breathe series (www.freetobreath.org) and Lungevity (www.lungevity.org), both fantastic organizations that give their proceeds to private research grants for lung cancer research.
There are other smaller ones nationwide that you can google to see if there's one in your area.
Personally, I think any of the organizations that devote themselves entirely to lung cancer deserve our support. There are many, many fantastic ones, but probably the best (IMO) is LCA in terms of size, scope and hugeness of impact on a national level.
