Has anyone heard of IGRT (image
guided radiation therapy)? How would this compare to gamma or cyberknife? Any help you can give me on this would be appreciated.
I may be having some radiation to help alleviate my cough and chest pain. Thanks.
Susan

The following is from Sloan Kettering. Susan, it sounds like you are getting the newest and the BEST.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---
Today, using a technology known as image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), a tumor can be imaged just before the delivery of radiotherapy or even during a treatment, enabling radiation oncologists to verify its exact location, thereby reducing the margin of healthy tissue exposed to radiation to five millimeters and, in certain cases, to as little as one or two millimeters. If a tumor has shifted even slightly since a patient's last visit, the radiation beams can be adjusted so that they hit it precisely. This degree of accuracy is allowing Memorial Sloan-Kettering radiation oncologists to change the way they treat certain types of cancers.

P.S. EXPLANATION: Susan. You can't use gamma knife/cyber knife on a lung. This allows the target in the lung to be pinpointed with absolute accuracy even if the patients breathing changes the position of the orgran DURING radiation and also exposes a lesser amount of healthy tissue to radiation................................M.C.

hey, Susan,
they have a whole website dedicated to it - http://www.igrt.com/

pictures and everything - sounds very intriguing!!!

best of wishes for you

Susan,

Right now, for you, the phrase "By all means neccessary" seems to be appropriate.

You deserve the best and newest treatment available.

Hey Susan,
I had IGRT for my Rad. Therapy. 33 days of it. There are only 7 machines in my state -I happen to live close to one. It's supposedly more targeted-Less damage to surrounding tissue. But depending how MUCH & WHERE you have it-It is still Radiation & you can still get side effects. E-mail me if I can ans. anything for you. Betsy
