Radiation on the lung

0 Recommendations

My mom had stage iv lung cancer that spread to her bone (femur) which has come along really well and the tumor in her lung has shrunk significantly. All good news so far. Blood work looks good as well. She as a little anemic but otherwise fine. She went to her radiologist and he said he would like to do radiation on her lung once she is through with chemo. He is going to talk with her oncologist about it today. What can she expect with radiation to her lung? She had it on her leg and it was very successful there. I would like to know what she can expect beforehand. We are hoping for the best.
Thanks
Paula

As with chemo, radiation affects everyone differently. My Mom didn't do well with it, but that doesn't mean your Mom won't. There are lots of people on this site who have come through radiation treatments successfully.

Some things to be aware of are possible burns on the chest / back areas where radiation is pinpointed. There are creams for this. A really horrible sore throat usually around week 3 - 4. Again, there are good medications for this. Coughing - radiation can produce a lot of coughing. Breathing - radiation can cause breathing difficulties.

Just be aware of the possible side-effects. Like chemo, if you have an idea of what to expect you are better prepared. Sounds like your Mom has done really well so far and may not experience any trouble with further treatments.

Best of luck to both of you -

Thank you! I am just concerned. I know her leg she didn't experience any trouble but the lung is different. Thanks for your advice. I really appreciate it.

I am just finishing up 20 rounds of radiation to right lung. Honestly, no problems. The doctor is amazed, but if your Mom is half as lucky as I have been she will sail right through this. By the way, I was very apprehensive- More scared of the radiation than the chemo. I would recommend that you make sure they have the best equipment-my research concluded a 3d imaging was most accurate. Check the doctor's credentials-I would hesitate if they got their degree in Grenada (as one of them had here.) Research and as everyone says because it is sooo true-a positive attitude. Good luck and God's grace to your Mom and you.
