Predisone - WOW it's Good and Bad

0 Recommendations

Hi -

Well the Thyroid TSH levels dropped beyond low and the T3 and T4 went up...so the diagnosis went from Acute (not really cute at all in my book...) to Subacute. The Dr. put me on predisone and WOW - what peppy pills these are...started on 60 mg a day...then my ankles became cankles (calf and ankles united as one!) So they lowered the dose and are weaning me off in an attempt to jump start the thyroid...

Gotta tell ya - my joints don't hurt, I get more done in a day that used to take me 2 days to do....speedy - my husband said I am tiring him out just watching me.

As the days of weaning go...as the dose is lowered I feel the thyroid symptoms coming back...

Anyone else experience this with their thyroids?

GOD BLESS and thanks in advance
Janet

Hi Janet:

Well this must be the time for Prednisone. I have been sick almost the entire month of October with cold, sinus, viral mouth infection, back and forth to my PCP and last Wednesday to my Onc.

While I was in the office my 2 docs are discussing this "corpse" thinking they were being funny, and the conclusion was to put me on Valtrex, Prednisone, (starting at 60mg) and weaning me down, along with Doxycycline since the high priced Leviquin did nothing.

Holy Macaroni !! Those first 4 days I was like a lightening bolt, but wait, that's not all !! A few days after being on Prednisone, my Tarceva rash was Totally GONE, yep gone, nowhere in sight anywhere on my body. I can't believe it.

I know we can't stay on this stuff for a great length of time but I need to see my Onc again next month and we ARE going to discuss it.

And here I was afraid to take it because of all the steroid talk. WOW !!

My daughter has the low thyroid and has been on Synthroid for a lot of years. She does get tired, but then, she has had a heart condition since she was a teenager. She does take good care of herself, and goes for ALL of her regular check ups.

Am happy you didn't need surgery.
Much Love,
Marylou

I laughed at your words it brought back a few memories of being on high doses of the steroids with a bad case of bronchitis. It was unbelievable! I felt like I was so light on my feet, as if I were walking with clouds under neath my feet, too bad we couldn't feel like that all the time. it made me realize why the athletes liked them so much. But,,, they are so bad for us.
Sandy

Hello -

Thanks Marylou and cuddles - I was worried that the speed demon in me had taken over! I have a compulsive cleaning problem - (I clean after my husband has already cleaned...hahahaha --so of course this makes me compulsive in his book --me it just means men are surface cleaners,,,women dig in and get all the little bits left under, over and between things....) He says I am speaking too fast and in the store the other day he asked me to stop and look at something....it was detail oriented....I almost imploded trying to stand still....he laughed at me.

Yes I agree with why athletes eat these like candy. My whole body feels like it has been bathed in prednisone....I can actually walk on my feet in the morning without wanting to cry.

I'll let you all know how the weaning process goes.

Love you - GOD BLESS
Janet

Ha. I'm not that familiar with thyroid (even though I have a right-side nodule tht doesn't change my values are WNL..)

But steroids? Youch. They do so much but they are SO BAD!! Some of us are super-sensitive to them and will avoid whenever possible (like me). After chemo I was staying awake for 2 days straight, I finally asked my doctor to get rid of it and he cut it in half. We will see. 1-2 days and then I'll crash until I don't know what day it is any more. Gets rid of swelling -- yea, it puts it all in your ankles and peripherals! LOL! There's some mania in our family and this will trigger it so if it is even latent and not usually a problem this is the time. Even after my brain surgery they took me off within the two days I was in the hospital and I went home without it. They said I HAD to have some while I was in, it was apparently life or death (like isn't everything?)

This is one reason bipolar people go off their meds (not steroids) -- because they feel SO GOOD who wants to stop? Unfortunately, sooner or later (even on steroids) most people do. Kaboom.

God I love steroids! I'm my husbands caregiver, but I have had Fibromyalgia for 16 years, and I also have blocked arteries in my legs, making it hard to walk, and COPD. So I'm in a lot of pain every day. When I was hospitalized in June, I was on IV steroids. I felt so good, and didn't have to take any pain meds! But when I came home, and they tapered me off them, it got worse and worse. So here I am, begging my pulminologist for steroids! Of course, he's a good doc and he won't just let me have them, but it was worth the shot!

Hi Janet,
I'm starting the drop now so we'll see how it goes. Since I've been sick with all of this viral/sinus/cold thing, I am not sure how I will feel when I come back down to earth.

The Pred is supposed to reduce the inflammation in my sinuses and also two one quarter inch lymph nodes that lit with a SUV of 2.6 which isn't very much.

I TOO understand why athletes like them. Yep, I'm compulsive too but hey, with 4 generations of men in this house, I NEED to be compulsive.

Sure wish there was a way I could stay on a low dose of this stuff. Same thing with me. My arthritis has not been nearly as bad. I could actually be a junkie on this stuff.

Love to all,
Marylou

Hey Sandy,
I have never had it before and this stuff is great! For the first time in my life, I think I could actually be a junkie on this stuff. I DON'T HURT !! WOW!

Hope it does it's job and I will silently go back to normal :(

Love to all,
Marylou

Hey Gran,

:) ya don't know what yer missin'

Love to all,
Marylou

Hi Bonnie:

I can understand what you're saying. It's been a long time since I have had this much pep. Wish there was a way they could keep us on a low dose that would help out. I have arthritis and didn't even have to take meds for that this week. I'm lovin' it.

Love to all,
Marylou

The problem is I DO know what I'm missing. I just crash from even low doses pretty fast. 3 days up and then I loose time sleeping. I had chemo today, he halved the steroids from 10mg to 5mg and after 2 antihistimines (which I need anyway) and a full 1mg of ativan (usually I need zero or one on a bad day) I'm still rarin' to go. I knew I was in trouble when I found I was wishin I had had my pain killer filled -- I don't take them much and I'm not in paid but I do want to sleep, my body's going but I'm mentally fatigued from all this I just want to cuddle with my soft stuffed doggie and dream a while.

Awww, I'm cyber sending you Punkin, my sweetest kittie. She's soft and cuddly and will purr you to sleep. AND she loves everybody, even me :)
Sweet Dreams,
Marylou

I do dexamtehasone 4MG 2x a day for 3 days. To sleep I take 2MG ativan. I didn't take the ativan this evening (forgot) and I am still awake. I get up at 5:00 Am and usually I can't keep my eyes open much longer than 9:30. I have to get up early tomorrow to get my treatment and I am afraid if I take the ativan now at this later hour I wont hear the alarm when it goes off, but yet if I don't take it I may be awake most of the night.

I know what you mean about the talking fast, I was told I talk like a machine gun you know rapid fire. Also the speed demon thing.....gosh after a couple of hrs of taking the steriod I feel like running around and cannot sit or stand still. If I force myself to sit still, sometimes I can't think strait because my mind is running around even if my body isnt. As the day goes on I settle down until the next pill. However I have noticed that with this round of roids I am slightly less hyper than last month so maybe my body is gradually getting used to it.
