Pneumonia and pulminary embolism

0 Recommendations

My dad was declared NED last Monday.

By Thursday he was hospitalized for the first time since being diagnosed with extensive small cell in August 2008.

He has a blood clot in his lungs and pneumonia on top of that. In addition, the blood thinners he is being given are making his platelet count plummet and he is coughing blood all the time. He is in a lot of pain and the pneumonia has grown in the five days of hospitalization.

What can we expect here? Has anyone faced something similar?

I don't have any answers but I'd get a new doctor if he was NED and this sick a week later. Something doesn't seem right here. Good luck to your Dad.
Take care, JC

Pulmonary emboli are common with people who have lung cancer-have no idea why but have read it and the dr told me and my husband this when he developed this complication. He was on lovenox injections once a day from the time of diagnosing the embolism and I have heard that it is easier to stabilize the clotting time on this med than when patients are put on coumadin following heparin therapy.
Pain from the embolism is normal(not pleasant, but normal). I was shocked at how much it hurt. It probably doesn't help the pneumonia that your dad isn't moving around much in the hospital. My husband also had pneumonia during the time of being diagnosed with the embolism.Treated him at home but he was one sick man.

Antibiotics, heparin, nebulizer treatments and oxygen and a lot of patience(that is the hard one). I was amazed at how long it took my husband to recover from both the and the pneumonia.Has the pulmonolgist seen him in the hospital? Have also heard that chest physical therapy is helpful-just a suggestion.
Hope he is feeling better soon
Pat

Thanks so much for the feedback. He's on lovenex injections right now, but they might put him back on coumadin because the injections are making his platelet levels drop too much. He has been on coumadin for about two weeks since the discovery of the blood clot, but they switched to injections when he was admitted.

I hadn't heard about physical therapy for chests, I'll ask into that.
