NYU Clinical Cancer Center

0 Recommendations

Hello All,
My father is going to NYU Clinical Cancer Center in Manhattan for consultation and treatment for what appears to be primary lung cancer. The biposy performed today will be ready with Diagnosis tomorrow or Thursday. Has anyone been treated here? Just looking for some feedback.. He is going to see Dr. Abraham Chacaua and from what I hear he is great.
Thank you all!

I believe that D1's husband has rec'd superlative care at NYU. I also know NYU to be a fantastic medical center and comprehensive cancer center. But, if you "friend" (is that what it's called?) D1, she seems saavy and researched, and I believe picked NYU over Sloane-Kettering. I am sure that she has a font of information about particular attendings at NYU. As well, I believe her husband to have met with tremendous success at NYU.

YES - Dr. Chachoua is a genius! If surgery is required use Dr. Bernard Crawford - the staff at NYU saved my life - they are amazing. They move fast and they are tops in the field - you will feel "well cared for there" - and the chemo nurses rock! Dr. C is my oncologist and he is great!!!

First, I apologize for not responding sooner...sometimes, I take a few days away from the board.....You'll learn....life gets in the way.

Yes, we found great success at NYU. First, we chose NYU because of the thoracic surgeon, Dr. Harvey Pass who is Chief of thoracic surgery at NYU. Dr. Pass was formerly the head of the National Cancer Centers for the US; he is also the NY surgeon that Dr. West most admires (and everyone loves Dr. West).

When my husband first had a questionable CT 8/06 and did not respond to antibiotics when they hoped it was just pneumonia, we were directed to "see a surgeon 10/06" and met Dr. Pass. Interestingly, our health ins. offers the Cancer Resource Network which provides FREE treatment at Sloan. Despite that tempting factor, we chose to pay a fortune to have my husband treated by Dr. Pass at NYU. Luckily, we could afford to make that decision. I believe my husband is alive & well today because of Dr. Pass.

First, Dr. Harvey Pass is brilliant. Second, he exudes confidence. When we first met him, he gave us his cell phone and his email. We don't bother him, but if I email him, I have a response...usually within an hour. The man is committed to his patients. Anyway, Dr. Pass performed a bronchoscopy and a mediastinoscopy and my husband rec'd the dx of lung cancer in 11/06. Luckily for us, it was Stage 1 B. Dr. Pass performs the VATS technique (that is the way to go if you're eligible) in 12/06. After my husband's surgery, even though my husband was a Stage 1 B, Dr. Pass advised Adjuvant (preventive) chemo.....we did it because Dr. Pass recommended this. Dr. Abe Chachoua at NYU became my husband's onc. for ONE reason; Dr. Pass recommended him. We thought about switching to Sloan for the chemo (since it would have been free), but we were so impressed with Dr. Pass, we decided to stick with NYU just to keep Dr. Pass in charge of my husband's case. We've been very satisfied with Dr. Chachoua. Like Dr. Pass, he gave us his cell and his email. These doctors are reachable 24/7. That's comforting when your life is on the line.

The NYU cancer center, on 3rd Ave. and 34 th St., is really professional....from the concierge to the parking to the nurses and the doctors. You feel so nurtured and well cared for. I don't think you can go wrong with NYU. But, before you choose a surgeon, I would definitely meet with Dr. Pass.....I can't imagine choosing anyone else once you meet this gifted, commited doctor.

Good luck to you in making wise decisions.

BTW, my husband is NED....it's now been 23 mos. since his surgery.....God bless you and your family.

Thank you so much for your reply. I met with Chachoua last night and he was VERY knowledgeable. My father is starting on a carbo/alimta 1 time every 3 weeks. Surgury is not an option right now due to the metastis but we will keep our fingers crossed. next scan in 6 weeks to see what the mixture is doing.. I will be posting more questions I am sure. Thank you so much againa and God Bless You!

Dr. C is terrific. My husband was diagnosed in June 2006 and has had a few bumps in the road but we've always felt he received the utmost care and compassion from such a knowledgeable medical team. We recently met Dr. Pass and feel confident in his hands.

Sometimes Dr. Pass will refer a patient to Dr. William R. Grace, a sharp and experienced academic oncologist as Chief of Medical Oncology and Cancer Research at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center of Manhattan and a private practicing oncologist in NYC.

Dr. Pass has authored many hundreds of very important papers, written books and book chapters. He is not just a surgeon but a basic scientist/molecular biologist. He's trained scores of America's most prominent thoracic surgeons, including my wife's thoracic surgical oncologist for her chest surgery in 1996.
