You know I wonder the same. As you can see by my photo,, both of my son's are Marines (my husband and I also are former Marines) My youngest son was getting ready to deploy to Afgan but I was dx in May with stage IV lung cancer spead to my liver. They are both home with me now on a humanitian transfer from July to November. My oldest is now getting stationed in VA instead of CA which makes him closer. My youngest goes back to NC and will probably deploy within the next 6 months. Before I knew I had cancer I always prayed while he was in training that if anything bad happens ... let it be me and not one of my boys. Who knows maybe stopping him from this deployment ????? who knows.

I have always thought i was glad it was me and not one of my sons .My brother died young and i dont know who i felt sorry for most .my mother or my brother I think had i not got cancer my son would still be unhealthy the shock turned him around .so something good came out of something bad /Hope your treatment goes well and am happy you have your sons close by xxxxxxx
