New Chemo is Not Fun for Dad

0 Recommendations

So my Dad is on his 2nd round of chemo. The first round was a mix of carboplatin and taxol. He handled the chemo okay, although it caused a normally not anxious person to be very anxious. The chemo didn't grow (except for spine tumor) but it also didn't shrink. He also lost a ton of hair, so it made sense (but was incredibly shocking) to shave it off. So, they switched him to gemcitabine and docetaxel. This chemo has caused him back pain, chest pain and he hasn't slept well. I'm sure we can all handle this if it makes him better - has anyone had success on this combination of drugs? I could use some positive news.

Two different oncs told me it is very important to keep well hydrated. It will help flush out the chemecals and he will feel slightly better for it besides. Wet vegetables such as cucumber and wet fruits such as watermelon straight or blended with ice are helpful too. The nutritionist at City of Hope told me eating protein three X D is important as protein is needed for healing.
This is not an easy thing for anyone. Anything that will help support the bodily systems helps. That means eating as healthy as possible and regularly, sleep, light daily exercise as possible such as as little as 10 minute walks as tolerated, fresh air. Chemo makes one sun sensitive so take precautions, especially that bare head.
Love him, spend time with him, help him, get him healthy food, just be there for him. The trauma of the chemo to the system effects personallity and attitude too during this time.

The first round chemos are really tough and also probably the best chance for tumor reduction. I did have to quit first choice because of side effects, but other chemos are helping keep me stable. Just support!
