need advice or we'll lose this battle

So mom had her 5th weekly round of Carbo/Taxol. Doc is feeling good about it working because the pain she was having in ther kidney area has gone away which he said originally was the adrenal gland mass putting pressure on the kidney. We got the Diarrea under control for the most part, might have a round once a week but not nearly as bad. The nausea tho, yeah thats the big problem. She is now down to 92lbs which is another 5lbs in a week. The doc and nurses spent the day lecturing her about forcing herself to eat and staying strong. Doc said if she loses anymore weight he's giving her a break from chemo seeing as she should have had a break 2 weeks ago but wanted to keep going. Thing is, she refuses to eat no mater what I try. Ensure? tried it, she hates it. Milkshakes? still tryin different recipes to find one she likes. Mexican food seems to be a good path but she will take maybe 2-3 bites tops and say she cant eat anymore. She's been doing good drinking alot of water so hydration wise she's doing good. Anyone else have any ideas. They gave her another pill called Marinol to try to help with nausea and appetite. Any other ideas on what we can do. If the chemo is working and kicking the adrenals butt I dont want to lose the battle because of malnutrition.

The one thing my husband has been able to drink through radiation and chemo are fresh fruit smoothies made with yogurt and hemp protein powder. I make a whole blender full at a time and he'll drink that over about a day and a half. A typical smoothie would be 2 bananas, 2 large tablespoons of a couple of kinds of organic fruit spreads (usually raspberry, and apricot), a pound of carefully washed fresh strawberries, 2 or 3 heaping tablespoons of hemp protein powder, and a whole 750 gram container of 6% BF Balkan style yogurt. Other fruits could be substituted.
My husband tried metoclopramide (Maxeran) to help with feelings of fullness, but hasn't really found it all that helpful.
Although he didn't take it for this reason, he's found that Stemetil (prochlorperazine) seems to make him feel hungry. He had been taking it occasionally for nausea after having radiation to his spine and we noticed that he usually became very hungry soon after taking one. He doesn't take it for specifically for appetite (solely for nausea), but I'm just mentioning it for the record.
By the way, my husband did drink several Boosts a day while trying to get through the couple of weeks after radiation to a lung tumor, but he's grown to absolutely hate it. I don't think he could drink it to save his life anymore, so your mom probably feels the same way about the Ensure.
Good luck,

Hello,
I have read about folks who have had a feeding tube put in to get the calories they needed..............it may be an option to talk to your mom's doctor about. My thoughts and prayers are with you both. Mary..

I did the Ensure/Boost thing once a day but the one thing that I really could eat every day was soup and a roll together. I even made my own. My daughter would take me to Tim Hortons for soup and a roll also every Thursday and to this day I am hooked on going there.

Hope it works.

Sylvia

Sorry to hear your mom is still having a problem with the eating. I know that besides not being hungry, food often just doesn't taste right when you're on chemo. At least that was the case with my mom when fighting breast cancer years ago. I would definitely try to incorporate protein powder or other boosters in her milkshake or whatever she'll drink. You said she's drinking alot of water...is it possible that its filling her up and making her even less hungry? That is the big tip for trying to lose weight so maybe its happening to her unintentionally. If she understands how important it is to eat, and just can't, then the doctor will hopefully do something to help you. I hope you have luck with finding something that works for her soon. If she can only handle a few bites at a time, then how about a few bites every 1/2 hour? ~Linda

Hi,

Sorry to hear your Mom is having such a hard time.

When I went through having nausea and not wanting to eat, my next door neighbor (who is a dentist) recommended I try a med called promethazine 25 mg tablets every 4-6 hours for the nausea. It worked like a charm. I had been taking Kytryl but it didn't work for me.

As for eating, my husband fed me Campbell's chicken noodle soup and crackers. And for a change the vegetarian vegetable or potato soup. These were about the only things I could tolerate. Then he added baked potatoes and sugar free jello or sherbert. Eventually I got back to normal and now can eat about anything.

I hope this helps. She needs to get her strength back as quickly as she can.

Chessie just reminded me that the "other food" that my husband has just about always been able to eat is baked potatoes. Interesting thing, but someone on another forum that I read said that all he could eat for ages was baked potatoes and that he figured he'd been keeping all of the potato farmers in Idaho in business for several months. My husband also liked soup -- not my nice homemade stuff, but got a "thing" for wanting Campbell's Chunky soups -- chicken noodle, beef, and one called Sirloin burger. He ate those for lunch for weeks. Now he can't stand them and we have about a dozen cans sitting on the shelf. He was on a steak kick for a few weeks, but now he's starting to eat things he hasn't been able to eat in months. I know it's kind of frustrating, but you just have to try to find something that works and you might have to stick with it for awhile.

Gonehiking,

Sounds exactly like my diet. I didn't want the homemade stuff then either. And I ate steak every chance I got (even though you are not supposed to) but I figured it was better to eat anything that worked than nothing. I even had a few "real" milk shakes.

Chessie,

That's interesting about the soup and also the steak. I've suspected that there's something that the body needs during treatment, and it has its own logic. My husband has had slight anemia for awhile and I think that's why he's been craving steaks -- probably for some of the nutrients in it. I have no explanation for the soup except that commercial soups usually have a stronger taste and higher sodium than homemade soup. That might appeal to someone whose sense of taste has been temporarily knocked out. I sometimes tease my husband about how he seems to no longer like my cooking! (-:

Thank you all so much for your advice. I went to the store today and picked up a couple campbells soup at hands thinking just maybe we can trick her brain into thinking shes drinking and not eating and it worked. She downed a cup of tomato soup in 15 mins and even enjoyed the grilled cheese sandwich then sent me back to the store for more since she handled it so well. YAH!!!! its a start, little steps. HEHE!!! thank you all sooooooo much

I'm so glad it worked. Every little bit helps. Just keep trying different ones and she may gain faster than you think.

That's great news.

Marinol works wonderful for my husband. He eats like a teenager with the munchies. Soups, milkshakes, yogurt are among his favorites. He also would never drink the Boost or Ensure.

Peace, Love & HOPE,
Tina

The Marinol hasn't quite kicked in for the nausea seeing as she threw up both yesterday and this morning before i left for work. I'm starting to wonder if the vomiting could be coming from being so deprived of nutrition. After she ate yesterday, even tho she was still really tired, we sat watching American Idol and she was smiling, fell asleep with a smile on her face. I havent seen her smile in weeks. She looked like like my mom for a little while and not this sad wasting away stranger I've been facing day in and day out

Just a suggestion.... Stick to soup and other liquids until your mom can tolerate it. Does her oncologist have a nutritionist? If not, maybe the oncologist can refer her to one. My dad will see one tomorrow. Does your Mom take anti-nausea meds besides the marinol?

Kristi

I know you were saying that she drank the soup and ate the grilled cheese quickly - I wonder if trying to break it all down into spaced out meals would help. Maybe she just ate too much at once since she hasn't been used to eating that much?

But great that she found something that gave her an appetite! And the salty soup is probably good for electrolyte balance too.

Try Slimfast for the nutrients. I found it much more tolerable than that YUKKY Ensure and Boost. Not great mind you but tolerable. I personally find cheesy pasta cooked to death quite appealing when I am on chemo. I really do mean pasta cooked to near extinction. It grosses me out when I am not on chemo but sure cannot get enough of it when I am.
Good luck to you and your mom
God Bless

Well Many people have mentioned breaking the meals down through out the day. Only problem with that is I had to go back to work so she's home alone from 7am -5pm. In that time, she mostly sleeps. I call to check in on her and some days she'll be up moving around, will have ankle weights on trying to build her leg muscles back up but never any mention of food. I try to tell her to just grab something small. on good days she might grab a yogurt or pudding but no luck in getting her to really eat until i get home and give her the daughter in fear look. then she'll try whatever i give her.

Have you tried leaving her a small sandwich of maybe cheese or some peanut butter/cheese crackers. Or maybe even fine tuna salad sandwich (protein). Then call her when she should be eating and remind her to go and get it. My husband did that for me when I was going through the "I'm not going to eat phase" as he called it. It made me feel guilty not to eat it because he went to the trouble of fixing it for me. I ate it.

hmmm, good i idea. yet something else for me to try tomorrow. :D

Home-made chicken soup (maybe broth more than carrots, shreds of chicken breast and the like) and home-made matzoh balls (unless, of course, you have a really superlative deli near you.

Good luck. And know that straight water acts as a diuretic; she needs to have liquid with a high sodium count so as to do the ionic exchange and hold on to liquid and not become dehydrated.

Best of luck!

I wanted to thank everyone for there advice. Last night mom finished a cup of chicken and stars soup and ate part of a chicken sandwich. The sandwich got thrown aside but then again i tasted it and wasnt to pleased with it myself. I also took advice of Chessie and left something for her to eat. SUCCESS!!! I was running late this morning so I grabbed a pack of graham crackers (which she's always loved) and left them on the stand where she was sleeping along with her nausea pill. I just got off the phone with her, she said she feels very crappy today, threw up around 6 am but since then has been munching on the crackers. After today, I'll be off work until Thursday for the holiday and doc appointment so I'll be able to actually be there to get her to eat but another step in the right direction thanks to all of you
