My mom - SCLC w/Liver Mets..

0 Recommendations

Hello, my name is Melinda and my mom was diagnosed with extensive small cell lung cancer in april.. She has gone through a couple of different chemo therapy regimines (cysplatin, and etopocide (sp?) X 2 or 3 rounds, and now Topotikan nearly 3 rounds). After a recent exam her doctor did (just a preliminary one, he just probed her belly with his hand) he told her that he believes her tumor has shrunk by a width of three fingers from her rib cage.. He then told her about a possible treatment for the liver mets he'd like her to go through - Radiofrequency Ablation.. He said that basically a probe (or two) are inserted into the tumor, and heat is used to kill the cancer cells.. I'm just curioius, has anyone ever undergone this treatment, or does anyone know anyone who has? What was it like? How many treatments might she need to go through? How successful was it?

The doctor told us not to expect a cure, but I'm just greatful that there are options considering that surgery (removal of the tumor), and radiation to the liver aren't possible..

If nothing else, I'll be greatful if this will give her some more QUALITY time with us..

God Bless..
-Melinda

Marg should know about this. Either Mike had it or was going to have it I think. He is also SCLC.

I just looked up some information on this. Since most small cell cancers cannot be removed from the lungs, why dont they hit the lungs etc right of the bat with radiofrequency ablation. I'm no dr. but this actually gives hope.

Im going to continue researching. The mayo clinic website has positive info. How come everyone isnt using it. Esp. those who are extensive and not well enough to do surgery.

My mom had her CT today and hopefully results back tomorrow or Monday. Her thought process is very mixed up. Hopefully it has not spread to the brain. Please Pray.

I hope any new treatment works. My mom died in march 2005 after two different chemo rounds. Doc said go to hospice then came back with a chance of radiation therapy. Mom was so weak but agreed to go even though she had said many times she is not want this type of treatment if the situation was hopeless. She went down hill fast and never got the tx. It would have killed her anyway. You have to assess the situation and the strength of the patient. Is it extending "life" without any quality? Then don't continue. There is no cure for ext SCLC no matter what people say.
