Mom wants to drive - can she/

0 Recommendations

I am new to this site and intend to post later our story, but my immediate question is the following. In brief, my mom has Stage IV lung cancer with mets to the pelvis, femur, spine and shoulder. She is on a 100 mcg fentanyl patch and dilaudid 2 to 4 mg prn, but takes atleast 4 mg a day. She uses a cane and her balance and reflexes are not good. She sold her car several months ago as she knew she couldn't drive. Now she is going to buy another car and insists she can drive but will not ask the doctor. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this? Thanks.

I know for me I am able to drive, I take morphine but low doses and it is not something I will take if I am going to go out and drive, Ii wait. But she needs to check with the doctor because the amount of drug you mentioned is large, however for her it may not affect her since she would be used to it, she still could very much be in jeopardy as well as jeopardize others on the road,. I would think if she were to get picked up by the police it would mean a ticket for driving under the influence, not just alcohol is considered under the influence, this also means street drugs and legal medical drugs. Have her check with her doctor, warn her that she could hurt or kill herself or someone else, you mentioned she is unsteady on her feet, but walks with a cane, is she safe with her cane? This sounds like someone who would also be unsafe to drive. However, nobody wants to take any independence from a woman who has always had some independence. maybe the best thing would be to ask her to talk with her doctor, and first find out about that patch, is it safe while that is on her, maybe the other drugs, the prn drugs if she does not take them as they are to be taken as needed only she could drive as long as she doesn't take these while out driving a vehicle. Talk with her, and try not to make her feel that her identity and her independence will be taken from her, it is traumatic enough to get on with things after cancer. Some people drive back and forth to work and take pain killers, but I think when you mentioned how she was unsteady, and sounds a little like she is frail, I would have this doctor talk with her and have him, and her determine the safest way to drive if possible. I think it is a possibility that she still could, she may need to alter medications, and be on something else if she is wanting to get back out there again, this can be done and managed also. Take care.
Sandy
