My Dad is in hospital right now. As optimistic as I'd like to be I don't think he will be coming out.
He has Stage IV lung cancer. Spread to his pancreas, femour, thigh and both adrenal glands.
He was at home bed ridden and on constant morphine until a couple of weeks ago he was very sick through the morphine and not eating. He is all skin and bone. He is now hooked up to iv food, has had about 4 blood transfusions as his body is no longer producing white or red blood cells. He is constantly tired.
How much longer can he go on like this. Are there any people out there that have known anyone to fight back from such an advanced stage of cancer? Is there anyone out there in the same situation. This is a first for me and I feel for anyone else in similar circumstance. Somethings just don't seem fair.

I too am sorry to hear of your Fathers passing
I am of the belief my Dads life as we know it will be over sometime in the very near future. He is in hospital in Bangkok as he has lived in Thailand for about 10 years now. He's been in hospital for 2 weeks now after taking a turn for the worst at his home (he would be dead now if he hadn;t been hooked straight up onto the iv in hospital. It's been a difficult time for me as I live in Australia and work in India. I work away 4 weeks on and 4 weeks off although have taken time off to be with him as much as I can. I am due off again this coming thursday and hope to be able to drop through yet again on the way home from work for a day or two before heading back to Australia to be with my young family whom I have spent too long away from I'll be saying goodbye to him for the 5th time if that's the case.
He is a real fighter although knowing the inevitable, in a way I wish for the pain to be over.
I believe he has made a living will although it is not something that I have found very easy to talk to him about. Although he is dying, he is still set in his old ways and whatever he has decided to do is up to him.
You mentioned they had taken away the iv away from your Dad. Was that at his request? Would the natural course of the disease have taken it's toll in the end anyway? How long after they took away the iv did your Dad live for? Was he able to self administer morphine at a rate that made him comfortable before he died?

I believe you are at the end with your dear father. My dad was like this too and passed away before he could be moved to hospice. I am so sorry you are dealing with this. It is a terrible awful disease and it isn't fair. My dad had signed a living will, has yours? His oncologist told him he did not want to be brought back in the state he was in. Towards the very end, they started "comfort care" which basically meant that the nurses were to only keep him comfortable, regular pain shots and such but no more IV fluids (his kidneys were shutting down) or feeding tube. He was able to communicate with us up until the day before he died so I am grateful for that.

I don't think that there is a way back from where he is now - we need to pray for God to give His Grace and relieve your dad's suffering. I watched my best friend die from LC and one of the last things she said to me - the day before she passed - was that she was ready - and I know God was waiting for her to let him know - I pray for you and your dad to find peace and strength for when his time does come. May God hold and care for you and your family.
