Hi Everyone,
Is anyone in the Lucanix study? I believe it is a vaccine. If so, have you seen any (hopefully) positive results yet? I am looking into it - running out of options here.

Linda - I am also interested in this trial as I believe I have also ran out of options. My Oncologist is involved in a trial with it but it is for first line treatment only. I am anxious to hear how it is going. I see her next month.

Sounds encouraging.

I went to the site texaszan sent (thank you) and see that they are almost ready to do a phase III study with advanced stage cancer patients. I will talk to my doc about this next time and you might talk to yours also.
I'm a fighter (5 years now) and don't want to give up until I've exhausted every avenue. I was turned down for one study which used folic acid to deliver the bomb to cancer cells. There were no side effects other than constipation - wow! But, alas, they said I wasn't suitable. Darn!

Yes for sure I will be talking to my Onc next month. I am also a fighter - 4 years now and don't plan on giving up any time soon! Have just finished 3 months of Alimta six weeks ago and remained stable at 9 x 9 cm. I have had no remission in four years. What was the folic acid trial about? I know I had to take folic acid every day while taking Alimta.
Take care and let me know if you hear anything about this trial - I'll do the same.
According to the study, cancer cells love folic acid and need it to grow rapidly (just as a fetus needs extra folic acid for rapid growth). I know, I took it with Alimta too for mouth sores, then wondered whether that was a good thing afterall! Because the cancer cells uptake folic acid at a much more rapid rate, they hide the poison inside the f.a. so that when the cancer cell grabs it, it is destroyed by the poison. Because other cells use f.a. at a much slower rate, they are barely affected. The preliminary results were sooooo good, much better than any I'd ever seen, that I was really disappointed to be turned down. "Skiergirl" just joined the study, but I'm sure it is probably too soon for any results.
The Lucanix study is a double-blind study, but I am sure my doc would discontinue if there is growth. I will try to keep you up on this and other studies if i hear of any good ones. Please do the same for me.
Thanks, Linda
Hi you guys - can't believe I missed this discussion!! Just wanted to say hello ebcuae I am casting about trying to make sense of the info on trials and drugs etc. and was trying to find out how far along this Lucanix research was... if anyone had heard anything. (I am not eligible for the trial since I have managed so far on Tarceva alone. I am looking for ways to avoid traditional chemo without being silly about it - suntinib looked promising.... )
and one study was looking at pemetrexed + folic acid - I wondered what the folic acid was for...
anyway - wanted to say hello!
lots of love to all of you,
