looking for a excellent thoraci surgeon in europe

0 Recommendations

hi everyone.
I'm 48 y.o and have just been diagnosed as having stage 1a NSCLC of the left lower lobe. I had bilateral node enlargement and during surgery I initially had a mediasternoscopy where the nodes came back negative. teh sureon went on to remove the peripheral tumor thorascopically [VATS]. the surgeon did an extensive wedge resection. talking with different doctors I get different answers. I did not get the the formal lobectomy and I as thinking about getting this done now ( 2 months after the initial surgery) . I was wondering if anyone knows any excellent thoracic surgeons or centers in europe {maybe Germnay?)
thanks

Hi ak88, I understand your concerns. Most of the time the thinking is that a lobectomy is the better way to go in trying to remove all the tumor. That said, however, if it were me and I wanted a second opinion from a different surgeon, I would prefer to look for a thoracic surgeon here in the US - possibly at some large university center rather than going to europe. Just a thought, but of course, at the end of the day, you need to do what makes you and your heart feel that you have done as you have wished to do. Best of luck to you.

Hi I know of a very reputable surgeon in Paris, France his name is Dr. Dartevelle. He is a pioneer in thoracic surgergery. Dr. West from Grace wrote an article on a woman who had a pancoat tumor and Dr. Dartevelle did some amazing aggressive surgery.
You can look it up
Good luck

Since he lives in Greece, I don't think he'd want to travel to the US. If you'd like more info from Dr. West, go to cancergrace. org. They are cancer specialists there and can be helpful. Good luck and take care, JC

Hi owesly, thanks for your reply. I did contact some US doctors however I get 2 different responses. some say just keep and eye on it and not operate while others say go ahead and do the procedure. I live in Europe now and the problem is that going to the US to get the lobectomy will be a big strain particularly for the family whereas in europe I would be closer to home and probably the recovery would be smoother as well. my biggest concern is the lymph node biopsy where if I am to get the lobectomy I would think a complete extensive lymph dissection would be best. I was told Germany tends to do meticulous node dissections however I do not know any thoracic surgeons there. that being said, I do not know for this stage if the extensive node dissection will add any benefit. thanks for your comment and response

Dear ak88, I have to say that I said a large "oops" wheen Cards7up correctly pointed out that you are in Greece and not in the USA. I completely missed that. I thought that you were in the US and were thinking of leaving the US in order to seek medical care in Europe (some people do that). Now that I understand your problem better, I can tell you that there are excellent physicians in Germany. In fact, I know a Dr. Kolb in Germany who was one of the first pioneers of a special bone marrow transplant procedure. Thus, I am sure that there are excellent surgeons in Germany, unfortunately I personally do not know of any. You may try calling an outstanding, world renown place like the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. I know a Thoracic Surgeon there named Dr. Garret Walsh. He is an excellent, world renown Thoracic Surgeon. You can call the MD Anderson Cancer Center at 713-792-2121 and ask for the office of Dr. Garret Walsh in the Department of Thoracic Surgery. I am fairly sure that Dr. Walsh should know of an excellent Thoracic Surgeon in Germany since doctors of the same specialty know of other excellent doctors in their same specialty all over the world. I wish you the best of luck. Doc

Since you live in Greece, I can certainly see why you prefer to get your treatment in Europe. And, I am sure that there are excellent surgeons in Europe. Just go to a cancer center, and start from there. Good luck.

Hi ak88,
Dr. Lambros Zellos, had trained at Harvard University and worked at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston. He trained under one of the best Thoracic surgeons. He is excellent and moved back to his home in Athens. I am not only a patient but I was a nurse there and he had an excellent relationship with his staff and patients, extremely knowledgeable and skillful. I wish you the best!

I had my surgery in St James' in Leeds UK. this is a brand new oncology unit one of the best in europe. Mr Papagianopolis is the top man.I guess he is Greek. St James is a university teaching hospital one of the best in Europe. I had ULL lobecomy using VATS with no further probs no pain relief required after 3 days and no further treatment. My son works in medicine in seattle and he was impressed.
All the best

Hi, I can recommend Dr Karen Redmond, she is the thoraic surgeon at Harefield Hospital in Middlesex (UK). She has a fantastic reputation with heart & lung and I know that people from all over europe are referred to Harefield for this reason. If you google Harefield Hospital (it comes up Harefield and Royal Brompton, you can see her overview). She has also worked in the states (again this information came from google). I can honestly say she was fantastic with my mum but our fight continues. Good luck with your search.

hi everyone
thank you for the information which you sent. I really appreciate your support.

God bless to all
