Is red meat so harmful to us?

Hi,
Now a days we have been hearing so many bad things about red meat....
The meat fat causes... Heart disease...
it causes Pancreatic cancer and so on..
Man has been eating it since he walked his first steps on this planet...
Then why such sudden Anti-red meat sentiments?
Is the red meat real culprit or our sendentary life style, Growth harmone given to these animals etc are the real causes?

From what I've read it makes the body work harder and produce more HDL in the stomach than the 'green' foods. I believe grass fed beef is better for us than cattle that is being raised strickly on grain and and not really given gazing opportinuites.

But what I makes me think is....
We are eating Read meat since beginning of man-kind.

They never had any problems....why we...
is it the fat in Red meat is killing or our sedentary life styles?
What should be changed? Food or life style?

Here in India, we used to eat Spicy food .. a lot of spicy food...

All of sudden.. Docs have started saying it is not good for health... and some people are really having problems due to spicy food like piles, constipation..

But our grand parents rarely had any problem with it...
why so?

Yes, moderation, i believe is essential. If you eat a bit of red meat, just make sure to also eat many veggies & fruit on those days. Balance. Personally i hardly ever eat red meat, unless there is a little of it in a burrito, etc...

when I was sick (sc lung and ovarian cancer 29 years ago) I did eat 80% raw organic vegtables and organic lamb chops from New Zealand. So I agree that optimising one's diet is helpful. But you keep the power.

anyway, those are my thoughts this morning on the subject. Isn't it wonderful to have this site to exchange ideas?

Talked with a true expert on prostate cancer and asked this question (I had been told to avoid all red meat). Not sure it generalizes to lung cancer, but it made sense to me when he told me that it WASN'T the red meat that caused the cancer, it was the method we used to cook it. Many cultures across the world eat red meat, but there are varying levels of cancer in those cultures. What he found was that there was a significantly lower incidence of cancer in societies that did NOT sear meat (char it). If you boil or bake it - and don't sear/char or fry it - there is no difference in cancer occurrence.

I'm still limiting my red meat consumption - but I enjoy it - without charring it.

I am having a pet scan tomorrow and on the list of things I can eat is red meat....now it doesn't say pig out but it says red meat is OK. I am not really a meat person so I am having salmon tonight before my test.

Every person's body is different, honestly. And there are so many things added to the diet -- there is grass vs grain and so on... you can get your buffalo and cow from good sources. You can pay a bundle too, and it's worth it to some it you can taste it. Others don't miss it, but our pork and our chicken aren't made perfectly either, you see a difference in most organic foods.

A lot of the 'things' added didn't exist when time began ... and a lot of organic is simply going back to nature. You pick and choose and budget I guess, there's no easy one size fits all answer. I know back when I had my gall bladder out I could eat a rare steak but I sure couldn't eat a chicken salad.

I've been trying to stick to The Blood Type Diet and red meat is very bad for my blood type. However, if a person is a blood type O then red meat is beneficial for them.

The idea that blood type determines what a person should eat came from Dr. D'Adamo's father. He noticed that some people lost weight and others did not when eating food on the same diet plan.

With the application of science, foods where determined to be beneficial for a blood type if: The food does not agglutinate that blood type; The food does not raise the Urinary Indican (bowel toxicity) in that blood type; The food protects against some disease with a known preference for that blood type, and does not show any negative aspects; The immunological design of the digestive tract seems to indicate a distinct ability to metabolize the food well, perhaps as a result of anthropology or other variations; The food contains an enzyme known to react positively with the antigen of that blood type; and The food does not stimulate an opposing blood group antibody reaction.

Conversely, food were determined to be bad for a certain blood type if: The food has a lectin or other property that reacts adversely with the blood type;
Relative acid/alkaline balance as required to digest the food is not compatible; High probability of parasite/mold populations; and Causes a rise in urine Indican levels (indicating bowel toxicity).

Here's an alternative look at the blood type diet. I've read many scientific refutations but this is the most detailed. As for humans eating red meat forever, yes they have but they ate wild meat which is lean and doesn't contain nearly as much saturated fat. Also they got more exercise hunting the meat so they were better able to utilize the fat.

The average life span of people in 1900 was 45 years old. My grandparents were 37, 45, 42 and 80 when they died. Cancer, diabetes, Alzheimers, etc. are diseases of old age. The reason why red meat and sugar and processed foods hurts us more is because we now live twice as long and are exercising half as much. It doesn't help that growth hormones, steriods, antibiotics and arsenic (that's right, arsenic is used to plump up chickens) is used to get the most weight out of each animal in our mass production orientation.

The book, The China Study, talks about how cancer is taking off in epidemic proportions in the Chinese communities where affluence has allowed the people to buy more red meat. Interesting read.

You sound like you don't want to give up red meat. You really don't have to if you shop wisely and don't eat a lot of it. It does have vital protein. If it makes you happy, think of all those good endorphines you are circulating.

I say eat what you crave, if it is meat one day eat it, if it is vegetables and rice eat that, as long as you have a variety of nutritional foods for your body you shouldbe good, too much empahjasi onal of these crazy diets outt here, and then the next day we hear thetya are bad for us, even the food pyramid has changed, what next?? I don't find I like much red meat anymore for some reason, so on occassiona steak or some meatballs but not too much like years ago. I say chocoloate is the best meal, LOL.

According to the study, "Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective," which was published by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institutes for Cancer Research, there is "convincing evidence" that red meat and processed meat are causes of colorectal cancer, and there is limited evidence suggesting that red and processed meats are causes of other cancers (including lung). This study was a review of all relevant research to date and was published in 2007. They compiled the research and used it to make recommendations based on cancer prevention. The recommendation they came up with is: People who eat red meat should consume less than 18 oz a week, and avoid processed meats if possible. Oven-roasted or baked meats contain lower levels of some cancer-causing chemicals (versus grilling, frying or broiling).

I should also point out other dietary and physical activity recommendations to prevent cancer:

Keep your BMI (body mass index) to the normal range. Being overweight increases your risk of certain cancer such as breast, colorectal, and kidney cancer. Keep alcoholic drinks to a minimum (no more than 2 drinks a day for men and 1 for women). Alcohol consumption increases your risk of esophageal, colorectal, breast, liver and oral cancers.

Eat at least 5 non-starchy vegetables and fruits a day. Vegetables and fruits show evidence of decreasing risk of several cancers.

Get at least 30 minutes of exercise (equivalent to brisk walking) a day every day. Increase to 60 minutes a day if possible. It's even better for prevention.

Also, outside of this study, if you want to know what prevents cancer, EXERCISE. 30 minutes a day every day.

Meat is not necessarily bad unless you eat too much of it and only use meat as your source of protein. It's not coincidence that soy based supplements and things like cod liver oil have many benefits for people living with cancer. It wasn't until the '50s that people started eating meat and everything else, for that matter, in abundance. Before then most people ate smaller amounts and they ate the best parts, health wise, of the animal, not just the meatiest parts. Meat is just another over abused target of the health industry. Ask your grandparents how much meat they ate when they were little.

We cannot control anything.

I am so sick and tired of this study says this, and this study says that. Vitamin E causes this, but cures that. Good God.

My Grandpa smoked for 56 years. Had a shot of black berry brandy every morning. Used to dip his bread in the same grease that cooked the bacon the minute before (Hell he even saved it). Used to eat steak, meat, eggs, cheese, you name it. Oh, and also loved Budweiser.

Lived to be 86 and only passed away because he broke his hip at the nursing home and the hospital gave him the wrong medication and he passed away from complications of pneumonia.

What did I learn?

Live your life and quit worrying about this crap. When it's your time, it's your time. No one can do anything about it.

I agree that if there is a problem with red meat it's what is added to it and not the red meat itself . Regardless , it's the only meat I love and will have it daily ! if we listened to everything that is allegedly bad for us we wouldn't be here because there would be nothing left ! Geez, you can search the net and find something wrong with every source of water, also ! I will keep my diet of eating whatever sounds good when I'm hungry !

Yep I agree with the 2 above. My Mom is 88 and still smokes and every time they check her lungs they are clear.
What I think is funny is to see Angus Beef sold at high prices now when we have been eating Angus for years. Now they label it and double the price.

I'm a meat & potatoes, noodles, & rice girl. I gave up smoking, these drugs made me give up sex so whats left but some fine food and a drink now & then.
Our destiny is already mapped, enjoy each day for tomorrow you could be hit by a bus.

I agree with Nelzter, Prathergirl, and Chi-Dreamer. If you look hard enough you can find something wrong with everything out there. I'm a firm believer in meat and potatoes, vegetables, and fruit.

My grandfather ate everything fried in grease, smoked his whole life, worked until he was 72 and finally spent the last 2 years in a nursing home because he became frail and died at the age of 103. My grandmother cooked everything in lard, baked cakes and pies every week, roast beef once a week and finally died from a cerebral hemmhorage at the age of 98. Until the last they lived in their own 2-story home alone and took care of each other. My dad finally passed at the age of 84 a few years ago.

So I believe it is what your body becomes used to having and expects and if you change that radically you're asking for trouble because it's a shock to your system.

I have steak 3-4 times a week and enjoy every bite. And don't plan on changing a thing. I've been fighting this beast almost 3 years now and still going strong, working every day.

So everyone is different and has to decide for themselves what they believe is best for them.

In my opinion, all the money wasted on these different studies should be spent on findimg cures for things such as this cancer we are all saddled with, not trying to determine my diet!

I have similar experience,
My paternal grandfather, a die-hard fan of eating meat, fish, chicken, indian Cow- butter (we called it ghee and consider it healthy), sweets and so on... He lived till 95...
My paternal grand mother.. same as above.... lived till 92....
But I must admit theat they were very careful about their health....they might be doing things which are wrong as per our current belief but they did best to take care of themselves..and lived long enough...

About my maternal grand father, never eat any non-veg, very spiritual person...
but i know in his child hood he had faced a very tough time, no enough eating.. sleeping hungry.. due to poorty and his step-mother never cared for him...
He lived till 65 (just average)

My maternal grandmother.... still going fine.. she is 80 years old... No medical complications...
eats whatever there in plate... cooked by her daughter in law..
but not much of non-veg...

So what does this all says?
We all are different....
if we think Something say Smoking gonn cause Cancer. and still smokes... It will do...
Just relax .. enjoy everything in moderation....
and be happy....
