Hello to all of my wonderful friends!!!! Ok man was that the roughest thing Ive ever been through in my lifetime!!!! They only had to take out 2 lobes of my right lung so that was a blessing! I was in ICU for only 24 hours then bumped up to regular room.I do have a fever every day since Thursday but Doc says I am ok and took samples of blood and many xrays.I quit smoking the day of surgery and do not miss it at all!!!!!! I have been coughing and coughing horribly feels like my ribs are gonna pop out of my skin!!! I heard when you quit smoking you do get a horrible cough about one week later because the lungs are trying to get rid of the tar and crap in the lungs? I love you all and thanx for being so wonderful!!!! Sincerely,Kandy

Glad to hear you quit smoking.. I quit when I had my blood cot in my neck. It's been 11 months. It's got to help alot . Haven't really heard from anyone that has quit... keep up the great work..

Glad to hear you are back and made out well - good for you - hoping the cough stops soon. Take care.

Sylvia

Welcome home. I am 7 weeks out from right upper lobectomy surgery today. Not VATS. Driving to exercise and the store on my own for 1 week. Sorry about the coughing but it is necessary to get well.
So glad you are home. do whatever the doctors tell you, it works.

Hi Kandy,

Glad to see that your home. Did you have VATS or regular surgery? Good that you quit smoking ( amazing how you don't feel to much of a need for it after a partial lung removal - from experience I say this )

Take Care

So glad you are home and doing well. I have been thinking of you and praying things would go well.
It is a tough surgery for sure but sounds like you have had good care in the hospital. Hope you have help at home.

Kandy - YAY - home !!!!!! Not so bad right???? Good girl - no more smoking - yes - use a pillow against your chest when you cough - it will help alot! Are you going to have chemo once you heal???
Karen

Hi Kandy,

Glad to hear you've survived that scary mess-removing lungs indeed!
I'm going on my second year of treatment free 2b lung cancer. The first year was crazy wierd-hope you can keep up the good spirits and avoid the crazies. Best wishes-Laurie

If I had a million dollars I would rent an entire hotel and have us all party like rock stars!!!!! I would do anything to meet you guys you are all so cool!!! Well MY surgery was August 18 today is the25th and I still didn't get the results to see if this shit spread or what??? So I don't know whats next even what stage I am in or what type of NSCLC it is?
I called today and they will call me tomorrow with what? I don't know.I believe my doc feels if it didn't spread we will not do chemo or radiation. If it did then we have to.I did not have the VATS surgery he called it a mini thoractomy? He removed my lower and middle lobes of right lung.Anyone have any input?-Kandygurl

I didn't get my path results for about 10 days, so it's still early. Let them check everything thoroughly. I don't know where you had your surgery, but 10 days is pretty standard for MD Anderson. I just had another surgery there, and it was 10 days for the results of that path, too.

I didn't find out if I had to do chemo until my 6 week check-up. Do you meet with your oncologist before then? Up to that point, I only had a surgeon. I met the oncologist for the first time at that 6 week appointment.

Good luck, Kandy, and keep us updated! :)

PS The cough is a result of the surgery, too. Hug that pillow when you cough. Put it under your arm. It really does help. It was the only way I could cough up that crud. I wasn't a smoker, so I know it was the result of the surgery. ;)

Hi Kandy:

I am glad you are home and on your way to a full recovery!!!! Great News!

Kandy - There are so many stories about not doing chemo after surgery and then the cancer comes back - please ask your Oncologist as well as your surgeon - I asked my surgeon why I needed Chemo after my surgery "with clean margins" and he said "Because I'm not GOD" - it sucked - but It was the best insurance policy I could have at the time - glad you are HOME!!!!

Karen thanx for that info i was thinking the same thing myself .You guys are the best!!-Kandy gurl

Welcome home! When my husband quit smoking he did cough but only for a week or so then he noticed (and I noticed) a lot less coughing and that horrible wheezing sound was gone and has never come back. He no longer snores! That alone was worth the effort LOL.

What Karen said. That's why I did chemo, too. And let me tell you...when the tumor came up on my ovary this summer, my first thought was, "At least I did everything in MY power to stop this cancer!"

Hugs.

Lorie

Welcome home - wishing you a speedy recovery!

I do not have lung cancer but rather I am here learning things so I can offer better support for my brother-in-law who is stage IV. But I am a 13 yr. cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed I also quit smoking and developed a horrible cough and that is exactly what the Dr. told me is that it is from our lungs trying to clear all that old tar and nicotine out of them. In your case, it sounds like yours is partly from that and in part from your surgery. I bet you have a horrible one. But think of it as being a good thing, because it is.

I'm so happy your surgery is over and you are home and mending.

Kandy... GOD BLESS YOU AND CONGRADULATIONS!

You are a FANTASTIC fighter... and thank your daughter for keeping us posted...

Keep up the FIGHT... SMILE and LAUGH...

Glad to hear that you were able to get the BEAST cut out of you. We had the same surgery in the same spot. I lost two lower lobes of my rt lung in June of 06. I was a 2B. Surgeon said all margins were clear and I still did the 4 rounds of chemo at their request just to make sure, I remain cancer free. I didnt have any cough after the surgery just a ton of gas in my chest. I burped forever after the surgery. It is going to take a good while for you to feel human again. I was short of breath for a long time and still have pain and numbness esp in my rt lower breast. I still feel like a knife is in my shoulder and in my back. Dont overdue and no heavy lifting or house or yard work. I am a fellow New Yorker too. I lived in Staten Island for many years and alot of my neighbors got cancer. The air was awful from all the chemicals in New Jersey blowing our way . Who knows what it did to us? Be well and allow your healing to begin...Dianne
