Kandy,

I didn't find anything that helped with that. It's kicking your bone marrow into high gear to get those cells matured. I did take Tylenol for the pain and it helped some.

Hang in there. :) How are you feeling otherwise? It might be a combination between the chemo and the shot, too. Are they giving you any Benadryl to help?? I got a bolus a Benadryl with every treatment to help with the side effects of teh chemo.

Kandy,
I have a Neulasta shot the day after every chemo treatment. I have been on some form of chemo for 2yrs. I usually have pain for 1 1/2 to 2 days. I take hydrocodone and it takes the pain away fast. If you don't have pain pills I suggest you get some.

Good Luck,
Vicky

I was told once to take Tylenol before I got the shot. I always forgot, but Advil and a heating pad helped afterward. Yes, it hurts!

I get a human grouth hormone shot for two days after my chemo. It boosts the white blood cells(which are made in the thigh bones) It makes you hurt bad..I take a little vicodone it helps. Also if the nurse would give you the shot slowly it doesn't hurt. But if they just shjoot it in there it hurts alot. So tell how ever is giving that shot to slow down..

our onc nurse said alleve, advil or extra-strength tylenol. they do have stronger stuff if you hurt too bad - btw, the second shot isn't as bad as the first...

it's purpose is to replenish white blood cells so that you can be around real people - if your white cells are too low, you can catch the crud too easy, and that's not good....

My mom was in extreme pain from the neulasta with her last round. I agree with you, it was ridiculous. This time around (she just got her shot 1/2 hour ago) she took Claritin-D before the shot. Have heard this helps and the onc said it certainly can't hurt. Also, she is going to take the pain pills left over from surgery. The nurses said to only take Tylenol last time (which didn't touch the pain), but the doc said that was ridiculous and to take the pain meds. The only thing they said to stay away from was Alieve or other NSAIDs. Some people have very little reaction to this shot and some people have extreme pain, so I guess you and my mom are the lucky ones. Ask for some pain meds!

And like Patty said above...I've heard that people have the worst pain from the first shot...whether that's because you prepare better for the next ones, or because your body adjusts I don't know...but lets hope its true!!

Good luck! ~Linda

I just noticed that you said in your message you only had problems for 3 hours after the shot. You can hopefully get past that with one dose of pain meds. My mom was laid up with hip and leg pain for 3 DAYS afterwords, so I'm really hoping that this time around its better.

Hey Kandy,

My husband took a shot called neupogen which was for his white blood cell count. This shot hurt him so bad in the back I was sure he had blown out every disk he had. Nothing touched the pain and he couldn't find a position to get comfortable in. It was awful.

After two shots of that they switched him to something called Leukin. The same end results but a different drug. He had to sit in the chemo room for thirty minutes after the first shot to be sure he didn't have an allergic reaction.

He tolerated the Leukin much better and didn't have near the pain.

I think there is almost always a second choice of drugs if the first one isn't working or isn't interacting with your body the way it should.

Good Luck.

Khari

LINDA- i have pain for three days with that damn shot.I said it felt like I was beaten with a baseball bat for three hours(referring to the ammount of pain) lol sorry for the confusion-kandy

Kandy,

I also get the shots everytime I have chemo and even if I don't. My red blood cells are down so low I have to have them or blood transfusions.

The secret to the shot is injecting it very very SLOW. I had it done yesterday and no pain at all. They do hurt if they push too fast. It would take at least 5 minutes for them to inject it slowly.

Ask for a slow push next time.

Side effects I'm not sure on. I was sick for about two weeks but the doc said it was from the chemo. No chemo yesterday so I will see if I get any side effects. Will let you know.

GOD BLESS,
Linda

I received three of those shots and the bone pain was terrible afterwards for days....they stopped the shots and I worked hard to keep my immune system up and protect myself from viruses... Had no problems. Lots of luck.

hey kandy are you ok.. people are looking for you..
happy holidays/

Hey Kandy, agree with others responses, I had ten of those shots, I was one of the lucky ones that had back pain that they said could feel like back labor, I searched on line for help while I was in pain, because I had taken so many pain pills with no relief, I also used the heating pad and that helped tremendously, I was taking oxy at the time as well.... Hang in it does do wonders.

Kandy, I just wanted to add that the second chemo it's self is a bummer! It knocks you on your kester. This site is awesome because people who have been there help lots. My husband just went thru round 3 yesterday. Gotta get that -------- shot today. Good luck. As everyone has told me..this stuff ain't for sissy! Gotta do it if you want to kick it back.

Mike got neulasta shots 6 times after carbo/vp16. Our onc perscribed claretin D. The first time he took a generic claretlin D 2 hours before the shot, it helped. The last 5 times, he took the name brand one 12 hours before and again 2 hours before. It stopped all the bone pain.

I highly recommend the Claretin, but it MUST be taken before the shot.

Good luck

I have heard of the Claritin trick also. Just check with your onc nurse before adding anything new. You are right about that Neulasta. The injection itself is easier to tolerate if given slowly but it was the PAIN afterward that got me!! I needed the pain meds.
