I have a question

My mom went for her chemo yesterday and she couldn't have it done because she has a gum infection. She had been complaining about her teeth as of late. Anyway, he put her on penicillian for 10 days and won't be able to have her chemo until then. How will this effect her treatment and can her cancer spread in a short amount of time without chemo? She has done very well. Usually goes every 3 weeks. Her last scan showed a significant change in the size of her tumor. She also had it in her femur. She completed radiation in sept with that. I am just worried.
Thanks
Paula

It's not at all uncommon to stop chemo's in the middle for one reason or another. However it IS important to treat infections when they pop up. Doing chemo and having infections can be deadly too.

You might want to ask Dr. West this question and get a Doctor's point of view.

hey, Paula,
chemo is postponed for many reasons - infections, low blood counts, colds and flu. the reason is simple - chemo is hard on a person, and fighting a bug plus the chemo will put undue stresses on the body and exaggerate side effects. the onc probably believes that she needs to get well before dosing her up again.
take a breath, dear, this is a good thing for mom!!!

Thanks! She does seem okay about it but I was worried. She is doing so well that I just dont want to make it worse.

see dentist. keep hydrated at all times.

Has she had Zometa? This causes weakness in the jaw bone. I had to go off chemo until I had two teeth pulled and on penicillian for ten days. Dental health is so important during treatment.

I don't know if she is one it but I will ask. She was told to see a dentist but she can't till the first of the year. She has no money to go see a dentist. I have a client of mine who works for a dentist and got her a special toothpaste for me. I am going to ask her about Zometa.
Thanks
Paula

Hi friend, It's ok to miss a chemo treatement now and then. I actually cancelled some myself if I had a big affair coming in the same week I was scheduled for chemo. My daughters wedding, for instance. Even when your mom is not getting a treatment the chemo is still working and active in her body. Better she gets rid of the infection first then take a chance and have chemo when she's already feeling lousy. Hang in there. Write any time and I will answer. Marie T
