I bought a vita mix blender!!!

0 Recommendations

I'm so excited, I found a vita mix blender ( almost new) on Craig's list for $200!
Now I need some awesome recipes......
I know Ellen has some.
Anyone else?
I just made some kale, orange, carrot and a little piece of apple juice with a little ice.
Just wondering if it's always going to taste really thick?
Thanks for any suggestions!
((((hugs))))

Wow, Sandy,

You go girl! Great price. We have been thinking of getting one too, as there is only so much our ancient Hamilton blender can do. We just made an emergency energy soup which is probably really good for you as it tastes really greeen. I think this is an acquired taste.

As my husband is having problems chewing, we pureed his standard salad to make sure he gets his nutrients: cucumber, sunflower and broccoli sprouts, spinach, green apple and parsley. And yes, it is really thick, but then it is more of a soup. Personally, I prefer this stuff chewed, not pureed!

First he said he loved it, but later he admitted "it tastes funny, but it's perfect." I love this man! He has said the same about my cooking for almost 2 decades...:-) Your juice recipe sounded much better!

We usually use a juice extractor, the Sampson 6 for wheat grass, and our regular green juices which makes everything pure liquid by extracting it from the pulp. But as winter comes, we hope to get a VitaMix, so we can make heartier veggie soups. Keep us posted on your best recipes. And keep mixing it up!

Peg,
Don't know if this helps, the Vitamix 5200 (New Model), can be purchased from the Vitamix site in 3 payments.
That is what enabled me to purchase one last week, it will be here tomorrow! So excited, and So Clueless! lol
It does come with a 7 yr warranty, and claims with the new powerful motor REally makes drinks smooth. HA! I sound like a Sales Rep!
Anyways, if its something you decide on, let me know, I have the gals ext at Vitamix. She was very helpful! She included a free book of recipes for Health for Cancer!
I will share those with all of you! First and Foremost,
I have to learn how to turn it on! :)
Holly

Sandy,
I Am Sooo Excited for you! I am excited too! We can have fun figuring this out, and pick Peg and Ellens Brains in the mean time! :>)
We will be gone all day tomorrow, Mark gets Chemo and Radiation. We leave at 8:30, chemo at 10:00 - 2:00, but his Radiation isnt til 5:00! Long, Long day....
So, I wont get to use mine til Tuesday, but still excited!
Just feels like a little bit of "control" over something we don't have much control over!
And, we get the Healthy Benefits from it in addition!
I will be eating/drinking whatever Mark does. We will do this together, all of us!
Hugs Holly

Hi Peg and Holly,

Yes, I'll keep you guys posted on some good recipes. I know what you mean Holly about feeling like you have control when you start doing something positive for your health (and your husband's)!! I think you DO have control. :-)
Happy juicing!
Love,
Sandy

I just got a Vitamix also on Ebay - but hasn't arrived yet. Here are a couple a friend likes:

Blend well:
6 leaves red leaf lettuce
1/4 bunch fresh basil
1/2 lime (juiced)
1/2 red onion
2 celery sticks
1/4 avocado
2 cups water (altho she uses chicken broth)

Makes 1 quart

6-8 leaves Romaine lettuce
1 cup of red grapes
1 medium orange
1 banana
2 cups water

Alice,
Is the first one Soup? I am excited that the Vitamix makes the soup hot and ready!

Also, I am now wondering if I should have waited and searched longer to get a better price : 0

Holly

yum! thanks Alice.
I can't eat avocado. It makes my stomach hurt. :-(
But the rest sounds great.

Holly - My friend bought new - she wanted the warranty. I would have too if I'd felt I had the money. But my deductibles and out-of-pocket are starting again in a few months and I'm saving for that. I got mine for $200, and it is a 5000, with the books -- but always the chance it could have problems. It does come with a book, so I hope it has some good recipes.

The recipes above aren't soup, basically a drink - but I think soup will be great to make, especially for winter.

Does anyone have a recipe for a V-8 type drink?

Here's one more recipe (I haven't tried it):

1/2 bunch spinach
4 apples (peeled)
1/2 lime with peel
1 banana
2 cups water

I have a tendency to like the ones with lots of fruit, and of course the greens are the most important.

Dear Holly, Alice and Sandy,
Thanks so much for the tips, and Holly, I have the link to VitaMix but am still shopping around. The 3 easy payments are a great perk. We will probably do with VitaMix directly, so if you want to send the reps info, that would be fine.

I hope to perfect my soup techniques, as we really need to find a way to add more protein and carbs to my husband's diet - he lost another 3 pounds this week, and is now 140, which at 5'11 is not good. I discovered last night I could almost wrap my hand around his upper arm, and I couldn't stop crying. We see the doctor for the scan results tomorrow evening - say a prayer. Hope all went well for you and Mark today. You are in my thoughts...

Take care, ladies, and I think this is a wonderful little club you started here, Sandy ! Plus I love reading the recipes.

Peg

Ok, can someone tell me why we need the expensive VitaMix? I have a really good blender and it blends whole fees nicely and it cost about $50.

The more I read Ellen's posts, the more I want to at least make fruit shakes, but not sure why I should invest in a VitaMix.

Can you guys give me your opinion on this? Thanks.

Alisa

Hi Alisa,
The vita mix uses the entire fruit or veggie, it doesn't just extract the juice and leave the rest. That's why I like it. You get the fiber along with everything. I think it's better for you.
:-)
Sandy

Peg,
Maybe you should add some flaxseed oil to your husband's drink.
I'm going to also add cottage cheese (to give it the Budwig twist). Maybe alittle raw almonds or almond butter. I think it's important to add protein. What do you think? I'll let you know how it tastes.
I'll be thinking about you and your sweet hubby. I hope the scans come out perfect.
Love,
sandy

Ok, the blender I have blends the whole fruit also (minus the pit, if any). It's not a VitaMix, but I guess if it blends the whole fruit (it's not a juice extracter, but a blender) it's ok?

Hi Alisa,
Yes!! It sound's good to me.
Also I've burned out blenders before. The motor isn't as strong. I love making hummus and I've burned out a few blenders making it. Now with this power house of a machine I can make my creamy hummus with no worries about burning out the motor!

Hi, Alisa,
The reason we are considering the VitaMix is to be able to make hearty soups or puree veggies that are not soft like fruit, but more like carrots and root veggies that are too hard or dense for our old blender, and would require too much chopping or precooking. Here is the company description of the Vita-Mix 5200, which is the latest model:

Vita-Mix 5200 - The Finest High Performance Blender...Ever! Price from Vita-Mix direct is $449, but you can pay it over 3 months, and has a 7 year guarantee:

"The Vita-Mix® machine unlocks the hidden nutrition in “whole” foods that can lengthen, even save your life! A super-powerful, commercial-grade motor drives precision-designed blades that can completely crush and cut up whole food fiber so your body can benefit from every nutrient. Set on “high” speed, the Vita-Mix stainless steel blades pulverize the skins, seeds and peels of whole foods to make them more bioavailable. And that’s the Vita-Mix Advantage! Healthful, whole food meals are easily made in the Vita-Mix."

If you can do what you need to do with your current blender, then you have what you need. But as my husband is only eating a diet of raw vegetables, this would make my life alot easier, and give him a greater variety of things to eat.

I am still researching this but so far the only negatives are it is very expensive and makes alot of noise due to the powerful motor. I think Sandy got a great bargain - nice shopping there!
Peg

Hi, Sandy,
Thanks for the information - unfortunately we already tried the Budwig diet and he could not tolerate the flaxseed oil, crushed flaxseed, and cottage cheese puree after a few days. We use almond butter for extra calories a few times each day, but still need to find a way to bulk him up and increase his protein.

We will see the results of tomorrow's bloodwork and scan, and hopefully the doctor can guide us, but so far he is lean on nutritional info. Thank you for the good wishes and prayers - deeply appreciated!

Peg

OMG, we just made ice cream with the blender!!!
Used frozen strawberries, frozen banana, rice milk, and a little bit of honey. Well it was more like sherbet but it was great!! That was the 4th time I used it today. I also used it to chop all the veggies for tuna salad!! :-)
I love it!
They have the recipes on www.vitamix.com

Peg,
Prayers coming for a great scan! I am squeezing you tight right now with a Big Hug! Feel It??

The number to Vitamix is 1-800-848-2649, Her name is Barbara Hezel. Tell her why your purchasing it, and ask if she could include the books she did for me. She did it for free which was awesome.
One is Beating Cancer with Nutrition, the other is "The Wisdom and Healing Power of whole foods"..lots of recipes in there, they both have dvds with them too.
Also, she was a wealth of info as she uses hers daily and told me to call her anytime with questions...
Holly

AliceL,
For the price you paid, It was well worth it with or without the warranty! I am jealous!
I tried to find a used one on Craigslist, but the price was only a few dollars diff. So not worth it.
Thanks for the recipes! Happy Blending!

Oh, and I totally understand the co-pays....GRRRRRR!

Holly

Peg,
What about adding Whey Protein Powder? I will look for more ideas, I know you want Whole foods, but his weight needs to come up...hmmmm..
Dont suppose he would drink one Ensure Plus a day for a few weeks, that would add like 500+ calories a day..I know, the Sugar, but I read your weight getting to low is worse. Alright, still thinking as I know that Ensure idea didnt fly to well..
Hugs Holly

Dear Holly,
First, I totally freaked this morning when I read HollyJo and was like, wow, Peg, you are really losing it. All this time I thought I was writing to HollyJack - then I checked your profile - glad you got your name back! I had the same problem when I started here, so I just used whatever would let me get logged in. Now there is "Brooklyn" in the house everywhere here!

I have no idea what we are doing anymore - I can't believe I am spending a fortune on food each week, and yet he is wasting away. Forgive me, scanxiety is high today till we see the doctor and get the results at 4:45 - the lung tumors looks good, but the adrenal seemed huge, and we noticed a few more spots in that area, so we are dreading everything. My husband was so weak last night he said he needed real food, and ate herring and potatoes and peas (he is Swedish) so he was thrilled, and I was just so happy to see him happy and normal again.

But we were back to wheatgrass, green juice and sprouts salad today. I will check into whey - we tried hemp protein which was pretty grim, but the hemp seed nuts were better so I add that to his salads. Ensure would be great, but the amount of chemicals in it, plus the sugar, mean he would never touch it.

We will see what the scans say, and then we have to come to terms with what we are going to do next. Thank you so much for keeping us in your prayers - hope all went well for you and Mark. I am still feeling that hug! Right back at you...

Always, Peg
