You are definitly over weight for your height..
But I would like to know your body composition..
Earlier they used to simply look at BMI but that is not enough..
What is more important is Fat percentage in your body.
So check out using Electronic machines (easily available in Gyms, Fitness stores etc).

If your fat % is higher that 18-20% which I think It will be...
Then still for God sake, dont even think of crash dieting....
Stop worrying about it....
Be on Good Healthy diet, consisting of all kind of vegetable definitly including green leafy....
Moderate carbs with Low or medium glycegemicindex..
like Whole wheat bread
there are fruits too with low glygemic index...
example Oranges
And most important Do not completly exclude oil from your diet.. you need them .. So have oils like Flax seed oil with high content of Omega fatty acids,

Excersise.. in moderation .. I guess not till you get excessively fatigued...
Do both wieghts and cardio
consult your doc for that... how much you should...

Few more things:
It will be great if you let me know about the current status of your cancer?
What your oncologist are saying?

I may be able to guide you in a better way..

I have lot and lot of information regarding bodybuilding /fat loss
But your case is special.. So you have to be very very careful...
In normal case, I could have made you look like a fitness model in 6-12 months. I bet on that....

I am a non smoker, i have stage IV NSLC in my left lung with plural infusion, my oncologist said that i must reduce my weight. but he didn't tell me how, i took chemo only, no radiation, no tarceva, here in Rwanda we don't have these services ie radiation and tarceva
my Oncologist told me that radiation is not necessary, i do not know why. but now i am ok but still have small fluid in my left lung. God bless u

Hi Brigette,

I assume that the information I posted is what you are referring too. Being overweight can put people at higher risk for cancer. It also puts you at higher risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues.

You haven't been out of treatment for too long, so don't push too hard to make any drastic health changes. If you have a doctor that you can talk to about losing weight, that would be the best thing to do. Make sure you are eating lots of healthy fruits and vegetables. If you do want to try to lose some weight, talk to your doctor about proper portion sizes. If Rwanda is anything like Uganda and Kenya, the portion sizes can be quite large, and mostly very starchy vegetables, which are high in calories. I gained a lot of weight in just one month in Uganda several years ago!

Ultimately, your best option is to ask your doctor. He or she knows the most about your health status and what your body is able to handle.

Hope that helps.

Good advice here, but the best advice might come from your doctor.

I am about 215, 5'5", and I have head nothing but "do not try to lose weight while on chemo".

Usually because you have a hard time keeping things down anyway, the advice is eat whatever makes you happy.

So. Eat whatever makes you happy -- if you can't eat anything but. Try definiately to cut back on sugars and sodas. Read all the nutrition for cancer information you can get and formulate a diet style that will GO DOWN, STAY DOWN, and stroke your happy nodes too. Everything in MODERATION, ONE CHANGE AT A TIME (this is for keeps. well helpfully not the go down and stay down business).

Don't make some big diet out of this -- for a while I knew it was "bad" but was quiet happy with every pound that "disappeared" because I couldn't eat for a week -- but that's not good either so do try to make sure something good gets ingested or you will definitely end up in the hospital dehydrated. Eat in moderation and lower on sugar if you have a normal appetite, or on days that you have a normal appetite. Don't worry about it when you can hardly get that milk shake down -- just add some peanut butter if you can get away with it.

Oh. I missed you were already in remission.

Same basic advice. Especially cut back on the sugar, back on the empty carbs -- do talk to your doctor but again make one change at a time because this IS for keeps. Several small meals a day by itself can make a hugest difference over 3 bigger meals.

All I know is I am off of chemo which I lost about 45 pounds while on it, but now weigh more than most heavy weight suma wrestlers! I know I have a lot of fluid, my ankles legs and feet swell, I am on a mild diuretic and was told only take it when I need it, I do not understand how it is possible for me to have gained 80 pounds now. I am turning into a small elephant!!@ Help!! I know alot of it has to do with my lack of activity, I am so short of breath, and my doctor today told me it is affecting my breathing, and if I don't lose weight it will continue to wear down my joints, so I have to try and cut way back on food, I would love some help on how to do it, and also some exercises that will not put me into cardiac arrest. Iam ready to start a program to get rid of this weight, I need to lose 100 pounds. Never in my life have I ever been this heavy. Please anyone out there help me. My own doctor told me no exercising, so what next? Walking is hard but I do it, and can walk 1/2 hour per day maybe more but it takes a while to get it all in,. I have to stop so often because of my severe shortness of breath, I gained all of this weight with walking 3 1/2 miles per day, so figure that one out. It is the food I have to give up. no candy, ice cream chips and cakes, what a bummer, only thing in life that is enjoyable I quit smoking and guess what else?? So what is there to do so fun?
Sandy

Few thing s more, I have sent them as message to cuddles too.
For a while giving you following suggestions:

SUGGESTION 1. Before you cut down on your food please check what you are eating.
If you are eating mostly non-starchy vegetables, fruits, food which is not with high
Glicegemic index, moderate amount of oil but no fried stuff etc,
over all, if you are having a good diet then cutting down on food will not help.

But if you are having “Cheaps, cakes, chocolates, ice-creams, Mac Donalds etc”then
You will have to give it up. It is not that healthy food is always test less, you can make it tasty too.

Few suggestions if you are eating so called “Bad foods”:
1. Eat smaller portions slow and chew it properly, enjoy the taste.
This way you will satisfy your tongue too and will dump lesser bad calories.

2. If you can control yourself then better way is Treat you self with food that you love once weak for one meal only

Just do a calculation of total calories you are having and check are you eating
More calories than required then you may reduce some.

But some times it is possible that you calorie intake is correct or less than required but still you gain fat, it is because of eating wrong food and eating at wrong timings.

General SUGGESTION is, reduce your calorie intake as the day progresses, means highest in the morning and lowest at night.

Dinner before 2-3 hours of going to sleep.

SUGGESTION 2. After all excersising is good for cancer patients too. But instead of walking/running which puts lot of stress on joints you can do non-weight bearing exercise like using Recumbent Stationary bike, Elliptical curve machine, swimming etc. Consult your doctor and let me know.
if hea llows you to excersise then we will make a detailed plan. I dont mind giving you my phone number nad having a detailed conversation about it.
Just let me know.

SUGGESTION 3. Eat your food in small portions (5-6 times a day)

SUGGESTION 4. No simple carbs after sun set and minimal of complex carbs.

SUGGESTION 5. YOGA and Pranayam: It is a thing that I guess every cancer patient must do. It helps in curing lot of problems and believer it has helped millions of people all over the world.
It can certainly be used for fat loss too.
Even a research done by AIIMS: All India Institute of Medical Science, a prestigious body in India, has proved that yoga helps a lot in cancer patients of all stages in number of ways…
Right from increasing their immune levels, increase in pain tolerance, bring piece of mind
and in case patients with last stage, a sense calmness.
Try Yoga and Pranayam along with other thing s and I am sure you will be benefited.

Do contact me in case you wish to more.
