how common is feeding tube with cancer

So I'm sitting in the hopital right now. Just met with the nutritionist. They were saying that the aggressive way to handle the situation is a feeding tube. I knew this and last week was wanting it. I know its the best for her so tomorrow when the oncologist comes in, we will be request it but how common is it. I'm so scare we are gonna do something thats gonna make things worse. yet I know with out the tube its gonna be worse cause she's not gonna survive with now food. What I can say so far is yesterday they started her on a liquid diet, as of this morning she was keeping liquids down. Right now I've watched her eat a muffin and a half a piece of cake and is feeling good. Not feeling sick which is a huge plus. they of course have iv fluids going and actually had to give her blood yesterday. Shes still extremely week getting up and walking to the bathroom but hopefully the strength will come back with time. I've only seen 2 people here that had to have feeding tubes through treatment. can it make matters worse in anyway

You are so young to be going through so much. A feeding tube does just that............it allows nourishment to be given to someone artifically when they are not receiving enough nourishment on their own, so I do not believe it will make matters worse. The thing that bothers me about this situation is the fact that your mom can refuse it even though you want her to have it. I can't help but wonder what your mom wants for herself. Has she ever discussed this with you? If she does not want a feeding tube then the doctors cannot insert one even though you want her to have it. Have you talked with her about it???? You are having such a difficult time. Please know that your are in my thoughts...............................MC

thanks so much. mom and i have talked about it. when i originally throught about her needing a feeding tube i brought it up to her and she said whatever it take to make her feel better. When the nutritionist spoke about it today, she looked at me and said you decide. she knows I do alot of research so she's told me many times whatever she has to do to survive this, she'll do it. If I decide she needs a feeding to, she'll sign the papers for it

Sounds good to me............................MC

Krystal,
The oncologist is talking about one for my dad. I saw him eat two eggs, three pieces of bacon, and a piece of toast for breakfast today. The most I have seen him eat in weeks. The nurse practitioner will be happy that he ate that much today. :) I want to see how Dad does with his chemo coming up. He will also be getting scans after this upcoming round of chemo.

Hi,
I know several people who have had a feeding tube put in, one uses a naso gastric tube, inserted through the nose. They believe it saved them...they could not eat.....and were losing weight quickly.
I will keep you and your mom in my prayers. I am glad to hear she is getting fluids and eating some food.
She is very lucky to have you as her daughter and advocate.

Kallygirlie,

I would at least inquire as to a temporary stomach bag vs. a feeding tube. At MD Anderson they made it sound as if the bag was the better tolerated route...I personally do not know because I did not have either one but it would make sense to just ask.

Blessings,
Ellen
