how long is hospice usually in the picture for.
Hospice is generally for a diagnosis of 6 months or less to live. My dad has been under hospice care in my home for 5 weeks now. For my dad, they of course will not offer chemo but did allow him to finish radiation to the spine to stop growth of a tumor. They have been supportive.
Hospice is wonderful. We asked Dad's hospice nurse how long the average person is in hospice. She said there isn't an average...that she's had people under hospice care for 1 day and another for 3 years.
The rule for hospice is though that the doctor must feel that the prognosis is 6 months or less. The 6 months can be extended indefinitely is what we were told.
The 'rule' is 6 months but of course that can vary in actuality. My mom lasted 10, though I think they delayed hospice a month while they tried tarceva (she didn't last more than a dose or two).
As everyone has said -- hospice is usually offered for a diagnosis of 6 months or less. But nobody has an expiration date stamped on the bottom of their foot.
Hospice can be extended as long as doctors can affirm your loved one's prognosis is still 6 months or less.
We've been on hospice a few weeks now and I can only say wonderful things about their treatment of my mother and our family.
