Helpfull hints to quit

0 Recommendations

This is the first time I have written though I have read and found this community very helpful and comforting a lot of the time. Do any of you have any hints on how to make quitting smoking a little less painful. Any help would be much appreciated. Cold turkey just doesn't work for me and the medication from the dr. made me very sick and I couldn't keep anything down.

Prayers and hugs to all,

Fern

Quitting IS Hard. I quit 25 yrs ago. Didnt have to many things to offer for quitting so Cold Turkey it was. I kept my self very busy and ate ALOT. It helped to have my husband quit with me . We supported each other. I also had to distance myself from anyone else that smoked until I had the cravings under control. I remember it took about a month. If you fail the first time keep trying. I wish you the best.

Hypnosis worked for me, it's now been over 20 years.

Please go to the website "whyquit.com" and spend 10 hours reading everything you can. I truly believe that an "educated quit" is the only way to go. You can do it! If I can quit, anyone can - I was a die hard smoker.

There is no magic bullet. It is hard, but you can do it if you educate yourself.

I quit cold turkey after about 57 yrs of smoking. I did the same thing 4 or 5 yrs ago when I had carotid artery surgery but I decided to have just one and was right back at it. I tried the patch that works for many, but I wanted to smoke so that didn't work, couldn't smoke and have the patch. This time I had been using those little plastic filters that keep a lot of tar and nicotine out for at least 3 yrs and did have 3 artificial cigarettes you don't light that I would pick up each time I would quit.
I cannot find these now but they have others.. I kept cutting down and said no not now, I do not go out to the patio for my coffee and read the paper but stay in the house where I don't smoke.... You just need to change your habits with this, go out and take a walk if able, I cannot walk that far with hip....but Quit the day before biopsy on June 5th and haven't picked up another. Also tried the chantix until I saw it was causing people to commit suicide and have a friend who personally knew a man who did this and seemed to have never been depressed. Been more than one to do it. Another thing I don't care how much your doctors pressure you or your family, you have to want to quit. I really didn't want to but I wanted that more that to die. Turns out mine was rare and not caused by smoking. I quit one time before that for 6 weeks years ago when my first husband was dying of lung cancer, went all through the funeral and all and then broke out in hives from nerves and went back to it. Good luck and God Bless, prayers will be with you. I did pray to God that he would help me to stop also, feel like he really did this for me.....

I smoked (a lot) all my adult life and tried many times to quit, but no luck.

The only way I finally managed to do it was to attend a Nicotine Anonymous group once a week. There I was with people who understood the fierceness of the cravings, because they were trying to deal with their own. We laughed and cried together and FINALLY I was able to quit cigarettes.

Talk about determination: one man in the group was riding TRAINS all night--trains that didn't allow any smoking--in order to remove himself from any possibility of taking another cigarette. He made it too, finally.

If there isn't any group anywhere near you, call "Legacy" (the advice group that cigarette makers were forced to fund) and find out from them where the nearest group is. I don't know the phone number, but I'm sure the info operator will have an 800 no.

Keep trying--that's the main thing. Try and try and curse and cry and wring your hands and eventually you'll be smoke-free!! Betcha, as Sarah Palin would say. . .

I quit 12 years ago - cold turkey - and on Thanksgiving Day with 14 people for dinner! I can tell you my nerves were shot! But, I really think it's the best way, not easy, but nothing worthwhile is!

My step-Dad is trying to quit and he chews the Nicorette gum. He thinks it works pretty well. I think alot of it is mind over matter. To this day I sometimes get the urge to smoke, but I don't.

Good luck!

I don't know why I finally quit when I did- I had tried a million times before. But I truly thank God daily that I did quit 2 years before my diagnosis. I don't know if I could have quit after the diagnosis- it would have been more agony on top of the agony of the diagnosis itself- but I smoked so much that I can't see quitting with all this on my shoulders too.

At any rate, I used the patches as ordered, went to a weekly Nicotine Anonymous meeting, my husband had quit before me, and I exercised like crazy- walked and walked. Still didn't lose weight tough! I was crazed at times but I just knew I would not smoke a cigarette no matter what. It took a year to get comfortable with not smoking and today It is one of the true miracles of my life.

Pray- and God Bless!!

I am pretty hard headed and I managed to quit for a couple of months after I surgically had 2 lobes removed. Ater a short period of time i figured I was safe and started again... WELP!...I got a nodule on the other side and they did a wedge resection (VATS)..O.K..No big deal, that wasn,t too painful and they got it all...SO...I started sneaking a few (after all it's my life)... 6 months later...WELP AGAIN !...This time they took the rest of the lobe that that they had done the Vats on...O.K...So now I am down to 2 lobes...1 on each side...Hey !!! ..I must admit that I was a slow learner but it has been REAL easy not to smoke since then...GOOD LUCK & GOD BLESS !!! i quit SUCCESSFULLY. SO EASY IT IS FUNNY.
you see smoking is a double addiction, and if you do not address both addictions equally you will always LOSE.
First the addiction of nicotine, that you will use NICODERM CQ, follow the plan i think it was 10 or 12 weeks, starting with the highest dose.
The second addiction is HABIT, for that my dear, you must keep your MOUTH busy, i mean chewing gum, hard candy, loli pop, anything to keep that mouth away from being lonely. BELEIVE ME, it will work , it is so funny, the first day you will be laughing. let me know how it went please. THANK YOU

My dad was on a respirator (100%) for 8 days...fully awake. He had sleep apnea. His blood ox level was 29%. 12 yrs later he died of lung cancer. If THAT doesn't make you want to quit, I don't know have any ideas for you. Dad smoked for 45 yrs. He tried to quit 3-4 times when I was growing up. When he found out it was threatening his life, it wasn't hard anymore.

Wellbutrin and nicotine lozenges got me through it 2 1/2 years ago. Watching my husband struggling to breathe has made me stay quit because I don't want to get COPD worse than I already have.

Fern,
After smoking 2 packs a day for 40 yrs. my husband quit cold turkey. He also quit drinking coffee because he associated the two. Good luck to you whatever you try; you have made the wise decision.

i seem to have the same problem i cant quit i have stage 3a lung cancer what is wrong with me why cant i stop.. how stupid can i be im 41 married for 21 years to a wonderful husband and have 5 kids and one grandson shouldnt that be enough to quit .....hope your stronger than me good luck angela

My mom quit the day she found out she had stage iv lung cancer...she did use commit AND the thing that helped her the most and what she still uses is LOLLIPOPS...go buy a great big bag of "dum dums"...everytime you have the urge, take a lollipop! Take them with you in the car, in your purse, everywhere...it worked for her!

Good luck!
