Pneumonia Cancer Surgery Bronchitis Lung cancer Liver transplant Common cold
Why are you worried about gettingit? I am going to definitely take it.
Sandy
I would definitly Ask your Oncologist first. The H1N1 is a "Live" vaccine. That means you will more than likely get at least a mild case of the swine flu.
I personally, am not sure I will get in line for that one.
I am in the Medical Field, most of us do NOT want it.
Just my 2 cents...
I wanted my hubby to get it, but dont think his oncologist will okay it.
The Normal Flu shot is available now, and it is a "Dead' vaccine. We will both get that one.
Holly
If your immune supressed probably not. ask your onc.Good luck AndiB
I read if your wbc or immune system is low you should not get any virus inoculations. I would check with your Onc first.
Linda
I'm confused. My husband's Onc told him to get both of them. Now, I'm really hesitant.
The flu shot I read about stated it covered h1n1 and the others too so I was assuming it was just one shot. I think as all you can go on is what your Dr says. Phil was asking me, last year right before his surgery they wanted him to get one. Well, it was maybe a couple weeks before. He asked who he should call and I said the Thoracic surgeon, he doesn't have an oncologist. I'm glad you brought this up, I'll let you know what we find out. Kathy
ASK YOU DOCTOR ABOUT GETTING ANY FLU SHOT or vaccine for that matter.
BUT i AM GETTING THE SEASONAL FLU SHOT THIS WEEK.
THE h1n1 Is NOT OUT UNTIL Mid OCTOBER.
My Pulm has given me the "standard" flu shot every year - I called last week and asked about the H1N1 and they said I have to call back on September 21st when the "protocols" will be announced.....Not sure what the heck that means for us - but I will let you know on the 21st after I find out...

peyz33,
It is not known yet if there will be enough of the H1N1 vaccine to go around. When that happens they will have Protocols as to who gets it first, ie..children, pregnant women, healthcare workers.
I think anyone who has had Lung Surgery should be first on the list also, unless it is contraindicated.
I would think No one currently having chemo treatments will be able to get one with an already compromised immune system.
Holly
Thanks everyone for your reply's. I am very nervous about getting it just because it is new and we don't know what the side effects are or any other issues.
I will get the standard flu shot and I am going to get a
Pneumonia shot just because I have not had one. I understand the Pneumonia shot is good for 5 years.
I think I will just talk to my doctor about the swine flu shot.
talking to the dr. is a VERY good idea!!
I took the last Swine flu shot back in the 1970's and lived to tell the tale. My understanding is that children are most susceptible, followed by young adults. I think the vaccine will be prioritized for those and health care workers. They feel the elderly may be at less risk because of building immunity over time to to similar viruses. However, there is the concern of taking a live virus while on chemo so asking the dr. is the only way to go.
My oncologist said to get the shots as long as I'm not immmuno-suppressed, and no asthma/lung problems. That sound a little strange, since I have SCLC, but what do I know? I think I'll ask again at the next appt. He also said to wait until later in the season, since neither H1N1 or seasonal flu is likely to be a big problem in North Florida until later in the season, like even as late as January. He will have the vaccines at his offices at the appropriate time for the appropriate patients. If you can't trust your doc, who can you trust? Right?
Has anyone taken the Pneumonia shot and is it a live vaccine?
I am also concerned about the shots and I want to write it down and ask my pulmonary doctor Tuesday but I will have to write it down or forget as I have so much to talk to him about. How long since your chemo or are you on it or radiation?
Now last year when I was on chemo they didn't want me to have a flu shot and even at my age I have never taken one. I ask about the pneumonia shot and he said no to that too that it only works for one kind of pneumonia. It kind of puts us in a spot, doesn't it as most of them it affected so bad had other things wrong with them and we certainly have something very seriously wrong and being in our lungs surely makes it worse. Just ask your doctor, that is what I intend to do and all we can do is pray they make the right decision, otherwise go with your gut feeling. God bless and you might ask him in your prayers, he will give you the answer. mitziger. I have even prayed that if a procedure wasn't right for me have something come up so I couldn't go through it. My hubby got a kidney stone. lol and couldn't go with me to drive me home. I didn't mean it for him but for me.........Poor hubby but felt like I got my answer. mitziger
Mitziger, thanks for the reply. I am not on chemo or radiation and have not had to. I have always taken the flu shot every year but not had the pneumonia shot. I am going to get them both. I'm not sure on the H1N1 yet. Still a little scared on that one. Will go with what my doctor says.
God Bless you
Hello,
We're based in Tasmania and are just about to get on the other side of the flu season - it seemed every second person had swine flu here during winter! My father (Stage 4 nsclc) who has undergone radiation and chemo during this time was advised against any vaccine by his ONC despite the high risk of catching the virus and being at high risk.
My family took many cautions to ensure Dad did not get the flu - hand washing with antibacterial solution, surgical masks (when necessary), and generally keeping a bit of distance where possible between us and other potential carriers of virus. So far, so good! We've managed to miss out on experiencing the flu!
All the best with you decision making - talking with your doctor sounds like a good idea. Cheers, Jen
Thanks for the reply tasjen0812. I will talk with my dr. Good luck to you and God Bless
Cuddles53. I'm worried because of it being so new and nothing is known about any side affects etc. I will talk to my dr and see what his recommends. Thanks for the reply. Let me know how it works for you.
God Bless
