Getting back on my feet again

Hi All,
I've been lurking in the shadows since having the gamma knife treatment on Oct. 14th. The treatment wasn't so bad but the side effects of the steroids have been rough. Much worse that I ever expected. I ended up in the ER at least three times. Once with a total mental breakdown, I think I did write about that but there has been alot of things I thought I did and more that I didn't even know I did. My poor husband has been on a roller coaster ride the past few weeks. But soon I'll be off all the steroids and hopefully a little more sane.
Tonight I'm traveling to my State Capital to take part in
A Candle Light Vigil to Promote Lung Cancer Awareness month here in Maine, by Proclamation of the Governor. I'm so thrilled I can take part in that this year, I wasn't able to make it last year. I still can't drive but a good friend is taking me.
I too am so proud of all the work Susan has done to help promote LC awareness, believe me it is making a difference. With Susan's hard work to put this PSA together and the posters she has created, it put a desire in my hearts to reach out to the school in my area to take a program to them about the risks of smoking and second-hand smoke and the ever increasing risk for never smokers.
My Oncologist told me to take two weeks to recover from the withdrawal from the steroids and this is week two coming up so next week I'll be visiting my first school. Its actually the school I was working at two years ago when I was first diagnosed, so it was only natural that that should be where to start. I had just transferred to this school and had only worked there one year when I found out I had LC. I worked at another school not far from here for 18 years as a the the Lunch Lady, and I loved it, watching all those kids grow up and then feeding the next generation they are all very near and dear to my heart, so now I have to get out there and warn them about the risk of LC and pray that somehow it will make a difference for the next generation.
I have made up students packets with LC bracelets information from Susan posters, I'm showing the PSA and an interview a local channel did on my journey with LC,and I'm asking the kids to stand with me and wear the LC bracelets for the entire month of November and speak out about the dangers of LC. I am so excited to be able to do this and applaud Susan's hard work because without her efforts, it just takes one to get the ball rolling, then another to give it a push and then another and before you know it we've got something big rolling down hill that can't be stopped.
We are on a roll now my friends, and picking up speed!
God Bless you all,
Tina

Tina, so glad you are doing better. What a harrowing experience you have been through.

I just wanted to let you kow that I- and I am sure many others - have volunteered to send out info on lung cancer and get donations in the neighborhood via the American Lung Assoc. They contact people ( I have volunteered for them since before I got cancer.) and have them send out the info and collect the donations every year.

They are are active and do have a campaign going to get the word out on Lung Cancer awareness and seeking donations.

Hopefully the Cancer Society will have a campaign too.

The troops are out in many forms to find a cure and early detection.

I hope you have fun doing the school program and again- I'm so glad you doing better.

Take Care! Marion

Glad to hear you are doing better and getting sane as the days go by - hah! Hope you have fun and great success in visiting the schools - keep up the good work and thank you. Sending hugs your way.

Sylvia

Tina,
What a wonderful thing for you to do. I am a former school teacher, and truly like your ideas about getting the word out to the students. Did you purchase the bracelets yourself, and if so, which company did you choose? I'd love any advocacy advice.
Sending a big hug your way,
Angie Derrick

Angie,
I did buy the first box of 100 bracelets myself at $1. per 100, but now that I'm better organized I've requested that each school donate $10 to help defray the cost of the student packets. I ordered from a place called, Choose Hope, INC. And the order comes within a couple of days.
Thanks for asking!
Tina

Together we will win. I am so proud to be a part of the team. You go girl.
