Hey everyone;

A friend of mine was just diagnosed with late stage cancer. Do any of you know if there are any organizations that help with surgery, chemo, etc? Any ideas, suggestions, would be appreciated. She lives in Florida, if that makes a difference. Thanks!!

I've heard teaching hospitals are the way to go. A relative of mine is being treated at Baylor in Dallas and she has no insurance.

Hi there. There are many of hospitals and/or cancer centers that offer a "charity care" program. She must contact all of the regional hospitals and ask about the program. She should also be able to apply for medical services through medicaid (social services). If you need help finding this, let me know. Medical billing is my specialty!

Hi
well this is what I did... maybe of help?
1) find out if she is eligible for medicaid. apply asap
2) Clinical trials if she can get into one - costs are only transport ( I think)
3) Genentech - if she needs Tarceva have a programme or people w no insurance and no money.

best wishes

Ruth

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate your help -

Ellen,
Hello Friend! My dad didn't have insurance before his diagnosis either. We began the paper work (ugh!) immediately and now he gets monthly disability checks and is on medicaid. Before the actual acceptance of Medicaid he was informed to put medicaid pending on his bills. There was a gal in the hospital (he was admitted for a few days a couple months ago) that came into his room and gave us the info we needed to get the ball rolling. Calling the hospital and asking to speak w/ someone that helps people enroll in Medicaid would be a start? Good luck and Happy Holidays! Hope you are doing well!

Ellen - I hope you clicked on the link I sent - they are an org specifically for people without Insurance. 99 centsof every dollar goes towards helping those who can't afford to pay - please contact them - they are great.

Hi Ellen,
I too live in Florida and have no insurance. Tell your friend to apply for Medicaid "meidically needy". And "Share of Cost" program. Tell her also to be sure she goes to a Cancer Hospital or Cancer Research Ctr. I go to H Lee Moffitt Cancer and Research Ctr. in Tampa. I live 2 1/2 hrs. away, but it is worth the trip. Read my journal. It was recommended to me by my sister who is a 10 yr. survivor of breast cancer. She can go to the business office and tell them she has cancer and no insurance. Tell her to ask if they can help her. They will be more than happy to. Some of the nicest people work there. The doctors are the best from all over the world and the treatments are the newest. Please don't hesitate to write to me again if there is any more info needed. Wishing your friend the best!! God Bless
Eileen

You all are just the best!! Thank you so much for your info and time. What a nasty time of year to get a diagnosis like this,...although it is NEVER good, the holidays with youb kids make it so much worse.
God bless you all. Ellen

Ellen, contact the Lung Cancer Alliance,LCA.ORG. ask for Amy Maura . She usually monitors this site but she is probably busy with lung cancer awareness month. She will have some idea's for you I'm sure.- John

Thank you all so much...I think she has it worked out thru Moffitt in Tampa..You guys are so kind to jump in here like this...

Hi Ellen, I live in FL. too. I also have no insurance. I am being treated at Gainsville University Teaching hospital. I have had the best doctors and most up to date treatment ...My regular doctor got me in with a phone call....If your friend can get medicad that will also work. I do it with share of cost so the docs don't have to follow the medicad guidelines, which don't always cover all of the tests you may need...Where in Fl. are you located?...Best Reguards, Birdy

Hi again Ellen,
I know your friend will not be disappointed by her decision. Moffitt is the best as fas as I am concerned. I have been going there since Aug 29th. I am very pleased with the results so far. WIshing you all a very Happy Holiday!! My thoughts and prayers are with you all!!
Eileen

Hi Birdy; thanks for that info. I will pass it along as they live in Callahan - not too far from Gainesville - God bless you all!
Ellen

Yep, Callahan is very close to me. We live in St. Augustine...The best of luck to ya !!! & God Bless also
