Food, Inc.

I don't pretend to know much about where our food comes from, but I definitely know more after seeing the movie, "Food, Inc.". It is a must-see for all of us who care about our health and what we are putting into our bodies as we fight cancer and other illnesses. Obviously we have to eat, but we need to make the FDA, supermarkets, and corporations more accountable to the public. I'm not sure "organic" is as organic as we'd like it to be, but if more people complain about all the hormones and genetically engineered products, perhaps they'll listen.

I am going to get this movie!!

Thank your for posting this!

I agree about the "nott so organic"... case in point, "Horizon" organic cottage cheese, milk, etc. NASTY stuff.

I knew I could count on a quick and positive reply from you! Someone who had seen this movie asked me if I was really ready to see it. He was right!!! Trust me, some of it was pretty difficult to look at.

I called around to see if any local stores had it yet... finally I just ordered it from Walmart. Can't wait to see it! Thanks again (er, I think... hahaha :)
Ellen

After you've seen the movie, let me know what you think. By the way, the movie talks about Walmart selling organic foods now and how the public can absolutely have an impact on the food industry. Oh, if it were just that easy....... :-)

I will absolutely let you know what I think :)

The walmarts here make a sad attempt at organic...except for the "Horizon" brand and I wouldn't feed that stuff to anything or anybody...

Here are some disturbing links to the truth behind the organic industry I ran up on:

And then some news, and photos or Dean Foods/Horizon...

yuck.............

Is anything safe? I wonder how we can get/keep our bodies healthy and cancer-free with all these alarming issues. I do believe in conventional treatment and hope it will work for my husband. However, at some point we ourselves have to take charge by how we live our lives. I just saw the movie this afternoon, so everything is fresh in my mind. I think I need to see a comedy!

... ahhh, for comedy I LOVE Golden Girls!! Those ladies keep me company almost once every night! :)

Hi,
Read your note where you mention Horizon milk, cottage cheese, etc., are nasty.

Could you tell me why you say that? I'm an occasional Horizon Milk user and I'm sure I can benefit from your knowledge.

Thanks much.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I will see if I can find the movie. It is and has always been foremost in my mind when I shop and cook......Is it really Organic??? Is the facility clean????? I am a 33 year Vegetarian and, at times, have grown organic backyard gardens. As much as I try to become knowledgeable about food and food handling, I just don't know how to protect myself and my family as a Consumer and I do not believe what I read on packaging. Obviously, we do not see the facilities in which these products are packaged to see what is really happening. It is just disgusting!!! These companies should be slammed!!!!...Viki

Here is just an excerpt on this ONE article that almost says it all:

"These so called organic cows are being fed a diet of genetically modified grains, slaughterhouse waste (ground up pigs, chickens, dogs and cats) and chicken manure. It is too expensive to wean a baby calve on milk, so they have switched to weaning them on the blood of other animals."

The web is full of information regarding the clout heavy Dean Foods, the FDA who "gave them warning they were coming to inspect the dairy before arriving, and the lawsuits filed against them...

It just makes me sick to my stomach - and heart -

I lost alot of faith and trust in Whole Foods when I learned about this... Whole Foods should know better, but apparently they too do not care. Yea, it's ALL about the mighty dollar. My little organic grocer wouldn't hink of putting Horizon on it's shelf.

Not much different than Silk Milk. (Also owned I just learned by Dean Foods)

They stopped mass producing ORGANIC Silk Soymilk and never said one word to the public. They did not change their carton or anything, just started printing "natural" instead of the word "organic" on the carton. Then after several months of deceptive marketing, enough people finally caught on and they now have a couple organic brands you pay more for. But where do they come from and under what conditions are they grown and handled??

Here is a link to their scandalous actions in the soybean industry as well... If Dean owns something, you can just figure it isn't something you want in your bellies IMHO.

If you Google "Food, Inc.", you can read all about what is in he movie. Also, I believe PBS is planning to show it in 2010. We don't have Whole Foods where we live, and I've always loved going there when visiting our children who live in larger cities. Ouch!!

I saw this movie when it came out!!!
I'm glad you brought it up. It's a must see for all.
Thanks!
Sandy

I personally would not buy anything at Wallmart. I do not think they are a socially conscious organization and I would not trust any organic producta that they sell. As for cottage cheese and yogurt, have you tried Nancy's organic. I can find their products at Whole Foods but this is a link to their own website if you want to see where you can find it in your area.
http://www.nancysyogurt.com/nancys_products/organic_whole_milk.php
they carry many different organic dairy products. I have not found their yogurt anywhere but have been using their cottage cheese.

I agree with you on all counts about Walmart... They warehouse their food items and make their money on trading the absolute cheapest way possible, from boxed items (which I don't eat anymore anyway no matter where it's from) to "fresh" fruits and veggies, meats, etc. I used to buy their organic garlic until I tried some from my organic grocery store I shop at now... even Walmarts garlic had no taste which tells me it was old or stored in unfavorable conditions.

I used to enjoy Oikos yogurt until I discovered that Walmart recently added that to their food selection. because of that, I won't touch it any more out of suspicion (We ARE judged by the company we keep - Thanks Mom :)

I like Nancy's too. it is my very first choice. Tastes good as well -

God bless,
Ellen

Aren't our mom's always right. My mom used to say (she has been gone 25 years now. Died of Ovarian Cancer) "Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are"
One day, our own children will be quoting us.

You know you are so right again keepongoing...

My own mother was a dietician. She always used to tell me "You are what you eat". I used to just blow it off and suck down those pepsi's etc.

She died of "pnuemonia" at age 85 but I always secretly wondered if it was really lung cancer as she came through the "glamorous" cigarette era as a young woman and smoked all of her life (no attacks on me please) ...

Yes, I would love to eat organic food but how about those of us that have lost our jobs and have to make ends meet at Walmart, etc????? I cannot afford to pay double or more for lettuce etc on our income. Kudos to those that can shop this way but hey.....really.......when you have medical issues and loss of job and insurance please.......I can't afford those things.

I am sorry you are in this situation BUT there are other ways to shop besides Walmart.

1. The local farmers in your area would be a good place to start.
2. Eat organic foods that are important: apples, peaches, lettuce, etc. (There is a list of the 10 main ones. Just Google the internet; I don't remember them by heart)
3. Heck, the local grocery store has fresher, better produce than Walmart.

Walmart made it's money on convenience. Think outside the box...

MOST of us have lost jobs, have medical issues, and can't afford to eat this way... the entire world is in a crisis right now. My husband and I included...

It's not easy, when your world has been turned upside down. Lots of things went by the way side to buy the foods I feel like I need - life's full of choices. walmart does NOT need to be one of them.

God bless,
Ellen

Wow, you guys just upset my applecart. I have been buying organic milk, $6.00 a gallon, thank you very much and here it's not what it should have been. It is all very confusing, I am really glad Ellen posted those links. I will be better off buying from our local dairy farm and they are alot less expensive.

As far as cost, it is very expensive, we decided to buy select items organic and the rest we buy as we did before. Just added fish at least once a week and alot of chicken. The biggest change since Tommy's cancer, he stopped drinking pop and we quit eating out so much, and no fast food. We now eat out once a week, twice at the very most. We pack our lunches and instead of chips or pudding with our sandwich, its apples, celery, and those types of fruit and veggies.

I guess my point is that even though it is expensive and I don't know of anyone that can really afford to go completely organic, there are other little changes that can be made to keep your body strong and functioning at it's best.

Thanks for the info all you guys, keep sharing.
God Bless,
Tina

Interestingly, just this morning, NaturalNews released this on what I was ranting about yesterday here concerning Dean Foods and tjeir deplorable manufacturing/marketing policies. Specifically, the wool they tried to pull over our eyes concerning their soybean milk, Silk:

http://www.naturalnews.com/027450_food_foods_Dean.html

It infuriates me...
