Food for Thought

I posted the link below in a discussion today on diet, but thought it might be helpful about living with cancer on all levels. It is really a moving piece about Dr. David Servin-Schreiber, who had brain cancer, and wrote this book after completing his own treatment. "Anticancer - A New Way of Life" contains his research and information on nutrition, attitude, exercise, and hope.

Even if you don't read the book, the two links below contain some valuable information on not only diet, but how to live and thrive while fighting this disease. The Amazon link has a video of him (below the book info) which is also really good. Hope this is of some value to you and your loved ones.

I have met many extraordinary people here, dealing with this illness with such courage and compassion. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and support. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Peg

Exercise Cancer Stress

Thank you! I'm reading this book now and it seems to be the most informative all around of anything I have read so far. My sister is reading The China Study and it seems to be a great book as well.

That was a great article and scary. I have been feeding cancer cells in my body most of my life. My mom just passed away on July 11th from stage IV SCLC. My grandmother also died from it. I smoke, have never eaten a nutritional diet, but I do exercise by walking daily. This type of diet would be a drastic change for me, as I don't eat most of the food mentioned. I know I should do all that I can to take care of myself, but motivation is also a key component. If anyone should have motivation, it should be me. My life is also very stressful and has been for many years. I am going to get this book and do my best to change my life for the better. My other motivation will be to see my grandchildren grow up. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all here.
Take care, JC

Just wondering, they are saying milk from cows is not good for you. I guess this would mean organic milk, correct? And what about soy, I read this on the first site. I personally don't eat soy products, but your always seeing it as being good for you. Now I read it's not.
Thanks again, JC

Dear Sherry and JC,

So glad this was of help! And the China Study is really scary.

Like you, I am also struggling to eat as pure as possible. As I have colitis, doing an all raw food/juice diet my husband follows is not possible. I try to balance out and read labels, eat less processed, etc.

Starting in small steps to "return to natural" is the wisest, as this is a lifestyle shift. And Dr. Schreiber is really talking about incorporating good nutritious foods and a positive mindset. So, organic is better than nonorganic, but green is better than no veggies is his take.

JC, cow's milk has certain proteins like casein that are difficult for humans to digest. And most cows are fed hormones and chemicals that are harmful. So if you drink cows milk, or eat meat, it should be from cows that are grass fed. Check organic labels for that.

My husband gets farm fresh goat milk yogurt from our Farmer's Marker in NYC to supplement his diet as he has lost so much weight. Here is a link that explains the benefits of that. Plus, it is more similar to human breast milk than cows milk. But, I warn you, it is some unusual tasting stuff. He hails from Sweden, so maybe that's why he loves it :

I saw the new "soy is good for you" info, so who knows anymore. I think perhaps soy is fine in moderation, but having soy in excess does raise the phytoestrogen concern. You need to research and make that decision. We are adding hemp nut seeds to our diet as they are rich in calcium and protein. They taste like crushed walnuts. If you want info on this let me know.

If anyone asked me a year ago about all this I wouldn't have a clue. Now it is saving my husband's life, so as my sister said, "Peg would eat concrete if it would cure cancer." Luckily sprouts and wheat-grass are much tastier!

I wish you all the best. And JC, We ate all the wrong things for so many years, but feeling guilty is not going to change things. We can only do our best from this moment on. Stress is worse than any red meat - so just be gentle on yourself. You have been through so much. All the best to us all....

Peg

Thanks for sharing! I bought the book and will begin it tonight!
It will be a challenge, as somethings I have seen in the produce aisle, Scare Me! lol I wouldn't even begin to know what to do with them!
I have been buying Organic Fruits and Veggies when possible.
It will be harder for my husband than I to change. But I "think" he uderstands how important it is in his battle to beat this!
Well, at least when they told him on Thursday, that he was still Non-Surgical....he didn't even hesitate when I said I want to get some books and follow that diet.
I explained it would be Drastic.
He drove right to Borders! He is not a reader though, so I have to read it and implement it.
I am sure I will be back with questions. I would personally eat bugs and dirt if it meant a cure for him.

Thanks, Holly

Dear Holly,
Glad to be of help. I read your other posts and am really routing for you guys. Hope all goes well. If you want more info on the diet my husband is following, just read my profile and you will find a link there with some more information. Take good care. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.
All the best to you - Peggy
