It is so good to read all these posting. My husband is in his second year with this terrible cancer. He really does not think he will be here for years. I keep telling him that he nevers knows. To hear the 3,4,5and even 10 years story give me so much hope.thanks to all of you.

I pray every night and day
That God will keep lung cancer at Bay!!!!
Your responses to this discussion are very encourgaging and I pray for mum's health and my strength to help mum thru this awful time.

Hi there,
My mum was diagnosed in April 2007 with extensive SCLC. She finished chemo in August 2007 and has had good scans since. Tumour still evident but not active. She is doing great!!
Blessings to you and everyone else affected by this disease.
Never give up!!

My husband was diagnosed on July 27, 2009 with extensive SCLC, we are still in the midst of the battle, starting chemo #6 on Nov 17, 2009 and PCI next, but all of his doctors said thanks god it was SCLC, it is a lot easier to treat. Our family doctor has a patient who was diagnosed with SCLC 17 YEAS ago, still alive and is going to light up a cigarette at his 75 birthday. So we choose to believe and hope for the best!

Diagnosed aug 08. lscl. I'm doing great. All clean scans, working full time, and growing curly hair. The PCI made me very tired while I was having it. I think it also dried out my head. My nasal passages, ears, throat, and mouth were very dry. But no other bad effects. I wouldn't recommend it for entertainment, but it wasn't the worst thing I've experienced through all these treatments.
It's fast and painless. I'm glad I did it as brain mets aren't something I'd want. Good luck and God bless.

Hi Daughter816!
I came upon your blog during a radome internet search today. It has given me so much inspiration, I had to join. Recently my grandma found out she has extensive small cell lung cancer. The odds the doctors have given us are not good. She has already ready began chemo and is actually doing very well on it. I feel so alone going through this and desperately need some inspiration that my grandmother too, just may be that 1% miracle. Has anyone else survived extensive small cell?

I am confused by some posting on the site where people say they have Stage 111, or IV. As I understand it, SCLC has only 2 stages - limited and extensive, but non SCLC has 4 stages with subsets of a and b. Anybody know about his? has the classification changed recently?

Thanks to research on other cancers some new drugs are available, but not much for SCLC. Some doctors will prescribe off label. As for survival, medical research suggests that 5% of patients will still be alive after 5 yrs, 95% don't make it 5 yrs. I would hope those who do make it longer will be in studies to see just what made the difference. I know that in my mother's case initial chemo killed off one kind of SCLC cell, but another less treatable type of cells were hiding behind it and did not respond to next round of chemo. Mom was 77, very active and physically fit, but always thin. Maybe the doctor wasn't aggressive enough because of her age, I don't know. He is a big name in lung cancer research. Go to Doctors Guide to the Internet, sign in a guest and read the latest oncology journals. It helps to see what is new in research. For those in earlier stage and no spread to other areas, some of these cancer treatment centers might help, but it is hard to get your insurance to cover it. Goo luck to all. Remember November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month - where your pearl awareness ribbons.

Hi Daugher816... My prayers are with you and your family. I enjoy coming here, but the answers are not the same for everyone. I was diagnosed sclc with no spread in June of this year. I had my rt upper lobe removed. Two weeks after coming home, they said it was large cell carcinoma. In looking for more cancer they found an aneursym on my brain which needs to be operated on in the next couple months. On Sept. 1, I was going back to see my oncologist and was sideswiped by a drunk driver at 9am in the morning. I survived but the drunk driver kept traveling and killed 2 people in the next car. I also had a serious car accident in 1991. My right side is pin, plated, and screwed together. The doctors said 34 percent chance of walking normal and today I am 98 percent. Doctors do not have all the answers. Prayer is powerful. When I look at all the prayer chains, etc.. that were going for me, I am thankful. God has a plan and none of us may ever understand it. Keep us posted.

Well done you. I love to hear these stories cause they do give me faith and that is what I need along with a dose of strength and courage. I'm so scarred when I see mum looking vulnerable. She is 74 , do you know of many survivors that are older generation. Friends have told me that in older people that the cancer doesn't travel as aggressively but I'm not sure if there is any truth in that.

I was diagnosed Dec. 2nd 2006 with SCLC in my right lung with Superior Vena Cava involvement. I had to have a feeding tube due to the esophagus being squeezed. After extensive chemo in conjunction with radiation, I have been in remission since. So yes, there are miricles. I am one of them. It will be 3 yrs this December. I was 2 months in hospital and 1 month in rehab, so it was a long haul.

It's great to hear such positive stories. My mum was diagnosed with limited SCLC on 14/10/09 and has just started on carboplatin and etopside. Since diagnosis I've done nothing but cry even though I hide my fears and tears from my mum. She is adamant that she is going to beat it and having read some of these stories I am now starting to believe it. Specialists have been fantastic and have advised that if the chemo works well they will also use RT at the end of the treatment. As mum would say 'her fate is in the lap of the gods', she has always been a devout catholic and truely believes that God will direct her. I was very cynical and bitter at first but have now found that I have returned to the church and the power of prayer. Thanks for resuming my faith

thank you for starting this topic Daughter816. It's so good to hear survivor stories. My mom was diagnosed w/ limited sclc in June and it's been an emotional rollercoaster ever since. She is so strong and positive - she says her cancer is cureable, and as long as she can fight I will too. It's so hard to see a loved one go through the diagnosis and illness, but I have to believe that keeping a positive attitude and taking it day by day is the best way to get through this. I'm definitely going to be sharing some of the stories I read on here with my mom.

Hi Reg
I had a complete lung removed in May of 2006.
Waited ten weeks Did 4 rounds of Chemo every four weeks.
I did Taxol an Carboplatin.
As far as health I did not have a clue I had Cancer .I coughed a lot started coughing up blood.
I thought that is not normal. They found it with a (bronkoscopy) spelling.
I really felt good until I did the Chemo.
I have been living on pain pills every since I got of the chemo
Guess ya chose your poison.
I just did a Pet scan a month ago Cancer looks good blood is the craps'
High Sed rate crp is High Platelets are 687 .
They stumbled on some cyst in my kidneys from an old ct scan.
Did a bone Biopsy a week an a half ago.
They told me no news is good news so this morning the Dr. called me and said she wanted me in for another MRI on my kidneys
There are so many cysts in my left kidney it dont look like I have a kidney the right one is not so bad . Haven't got the results back from the Bone thing so wow did you plow up a snake. sorry.
Ya know I have a a friend who did Vietnam lotsa guys had bad complications from that war.
Chemicals were outta control, Funny agent orange funny thing about a half a mile from where I live is a factory where they manufactured it. It just burned convently.
Dig up a fuel Tank from a old gas station and the dirt has to sit for years .
They just leveled this place and got it ready to build on .
I am all american did four years in the marine corps love my country.
But boy has it changed.
I smoked for 52 years an had a body shop for 40 years .
But I don't blame my cancer on none of it I think it is just bad luck, and bad decision on my part.
Hope everything goes well for you and your Family.
Thanks for asking sorry for venting
Greg

yes, thank you for asking. My Dad is stable! Things are shrinking,no new things are growing and he is still living a relatively normal life.
It has been almost 9 months and we are grateful for the time. We are still hoping he is the 1% miracle.
How about your husband,I hope he is as well as can be.
D

Hi there,
Any updates on your Dad?
My husband is fighting the same battle.

Daughter--we will have 1 year in January. Odds are not all that good, but we have that goal...and more. Plan for the future BUT LIVE IN THE PRESENT! We took a little vacation over the week-end. Body suffered, mind grew love-buds!!!

Love-buds to all of you!!

lovemydad, keep on loving and praying. PCI seems almost harmless at first, then the ears get burned, then the throat, the some memory goes and some comprehension goes, and the fatique sets in BUT after 2 0r 3 months things get back to normal--at least that is the way it worked for my husband. He HATED the results initially, but got over them. Glad we had it, so now we are just fighting recurring lung cancer rather than lung and brain. That was the plan; maybe it worked. Best of luck to ya.

GregGriggs, How bad? How widespread? was your cancer and how good? was your health?

Which chemicals did you take, and how many times?

Wish you continued success.

Cathy, your dad has other health problems??? and is taking topotecan??? That is what we are considering. Husband has heart failure, diabetes, and sclc, ext. It's a tough ride. Near death every time. But we are not ones to give up. He fought for our country 2 tours in Viet Nam, then for many years stateside, and on other Airborne assignments. Sometimes we have to fight for out appointments, meds, and services. Will we ever get a chance to be safe, civilized, and serene?

Need more advice soon. Have to decide Thursday.
