Dx SCLC limited-today

0 Recommendations

Today my dad got the final diagnosis that he had small cell cancer limited. His has a large hilar mass 9cm and is going to start chemo on Monday. I am glad we are finally getting treatment since we have been going through this process for 2 months. The doctor told him he had a 15 to 20% chance of beating this. She said that his type of cancer works well with chemo and after 2 rounds of chemo they are going to start radiation. I guess my question is how bad is this going to be for my dad and what should I expect?
Any words of wisdom would be great since we are all scared.

I'm sorry your Dad has to go through this. At least he's beginning treatment now and that should provide some relief for you.

Everyone is different in the way they respond to treatment. Some people breeze right through it with few side effects. Others are down and out and have a difficult time. I firmly believe a good attitude is worth everything.

You can try to prevent problems with a good diet and lots of fluids. Water daily - at least two quarts. Gatorade and Propel are good too, plus they have some flavor so it's a nice change from water. Eating well is very important right now. Your Dad wants to keep his weight up. Protein is important. Boost or Ensure are good or you can buy protein powder and mix it in just about anything. Milkshakes and Smoothies work well for that.

Take the time to educate yourself on chemo side effects and how to prevent them. Fatigue is usually a side effect and your Dad should rest as much as he thinks he needs to. Ask questions! Particularly of the chemo nurse - they are gems.

I wish your Dad and your family the best of luck battling this disease. Be strong and stay positive.

Hi:

My dad had extensive SCLC and his first line of chemo was Carboplatin/Etoposide. He had very minimal side effects (minimal fatigue and hair thinned out, but he kept most of it). I believe this is usually the standard combination for first line of treatment.

I am sorry that you and your family have to go through this, but keep positive. Being limited stage, your dad is at an advantage!

My prayers are with you.

Cheryl

jj826 - I'm sorry to hear of you dad's dx.
I want to add that the advice that Marie400 has given you is absolutely correct.
My sister also has Ltd. SCLC. She finsihed her treatment August - the radiation was the worst part for her and the protien/diet is really what helped her though it. A few staples in her diet were brussel sprouts, almonds, and a tea, which the name escapes me, in a bark form.
I am happy to say that her results are to the point where they cannot find and evidence of this nasty disease.
SCLC responds well to chemo/radiation - I will keep you and your dad in my prayers as you battle this.
I know what you're going through but be strong and do what you can to keep a healthy, positive attitude for both of you.
Take care
