Docetaxel or Topotecan?

0 Recommendations

After mixed results from my second line of carbo/ETOP I have been offered 3 options:
1) no chemo--palliative care
2) docetaxel
3) topotecan
Who has advice?
(I'm guessing on the spelling.)

Hello:

I can't give you any advice, but I can tell you that my dad had Topotecan in January of 2008 for his ex-sclc and it made him VERY ill. He was extremely sick and I feel that Topotecan had a hand in his dramatic downfall. However, I hear of a lot of people who have had Topotecan and have had great results. Also, I know it is in a pill form now and it wasn't offered when my dad had it. The pill may be easier to handle? Ask your doc about that one.

Good luck with your decision! I'll keep you in my prayers.

My husband had Topotecan and is about to start his second round of it beginning Monday. He did very well on it. He had more energy and a better appetite than when he was on Etoposide and Carboplatin, which was his first line. He has SCLC.

Hope that helps.

Thank you cad1223 and boatinggirl. We are expected to decide by Thursday--your info helps. We had lots of crises on carbo and ETOP as well. .. several ER runs, 2 ambulance calls, heart attack, sepsis, and at least 30 days in hospital this year, but we are still wanting to find a way to fight. Giving up just doesn't fit out character. Wish you all well.

Hey, Boatinggirl--we are boat people too. We have had many--down to two now. Small houseboat in Pensacola and pierough (sp??) here in Arkansas. Haven't done much lately, but we did go to a ship launch in Pensacola Saturday--it was great!

Best of luck to everybody.

Did your husbands counts drop much? I just started my first round of oral topotecan.

REG--would love a houseboat. Have a small Glastron cabin cruiser. Taking it out of the water tomorrow. (We're in Pennsylvania).

Round 2 of topotecan was a little rougher. His is given by IV, not oral, 5 days in a row, and he had bad nausea and vomiting. They changed his anti-nausea meds, and that has helped. Hasn't been able to eat much all week and is weak. Counts did drop, but not any worse than they did on VP-16 and carboplatin. Hoping for a rebound next week.

Hope you get the rebound!

Husband's best nausea was Emend (Apprepitant) taken one per day, days 1-4.

Our weather and spirits have picked up again. Although we think we are a little late in making a change from current regimen under VA to closer private doctor, we feel like we are making a positive move--one with hope!

Love and Hugs to all,
